Remember when the Miami Heat began the 2020-21 NBA season by playing themselves out of playoff contention? Well, they’re back.
The Heat are 7-3 in their last ten games, including a 109-99 win over Atlanta on Sunday night. They will face the Hawks again tonight at home.
Jimmy Butler, who missed Sunday’s game, may be out once again with inflammation in his right knee. Without their leading scorer, the Heat banded together for the win. Kendrick Nunn led the team with 24 points and Bam Adebayo added 16 and 13 rebounds.
What has led the way in the Heat’s current six-game win streak is its defense. In three of the last five games, Miami has held its opponent to fewer than 100 points. The Heat are sixth in points allowed giving up 109.3 per game and rank eighth in defensive efficiency.
That defense was able to hold Atlanta’s leading scorer Trae Young to just 15 points on Sunday. Young averages over 26 points per game for the season. On Sunday, he shot just 3-of-14 from the field.
John Collins pick up the slack and scored 34. Don’t expect Young to have another off game, but he will be challenged by a very good Heat defense.
Atlanta averages just over 113 points per game. Against a defense like Miami’s don’t expect them to hit their average, just like Sunday night. Without Butler, the Heat will have to rely on their defense to win on Tuesday night.
That brings us to tonight’s play. The Under is 10-7 in Miami home games. The Under is also 10-7 in Hawks’ road games. The total has gone Under in three of the last five Miami games.
And here’s the kicker. The total has gone Under in six of Miami’s last nine games when the Heat have been favored to win. The Heat defense and an offense that ranks 24th in pace will make this a low-scoring affair. Back the Under tonight.
