If there is one thing that stands out about tonight’s New Orleans-Portland matchup, it is the
huge total of 241.
Yes, both teams are capable of scoring a lot of points, but 241!?
The Pelicans have played 39 games thus far this season. Exactly one has had a total of 240 or higher. The total was set at 242 when New Orleans faced Milwaukee back in February. The Bucks are the second-highest scoring team in the NBA. They beat the Pelicans that night 129-125 and the total went Over.
The Trail Blazers have played 38 games this season and have had two with a total of 240 or higher. In one game the total was 241.5 and the other 243.5. Ironically, both games were against Washington, which has the NBA’s leading scorer in Bradley Beal. The game with higher total went Under and the other went Over.
Now, both teams trend toward the Over. In fact, New Orleans has the highest percentage of games in which the total has gone Over. The Over is 28-11 (71.8 percent) in Pelicans games this season.
The Over is 21-17 (55.3 percent) in Trail Blazers games this season. Four of the last six totals in Portland games have gone Over and the Over has hit in seven of the last 10 New Orleans-Portland games.
But that number is huge.
With the point spread at 1.5, both teams are going to have to score in or around the 120s. The total in the Pelicans last game was 250. The totals in three of the last four Trail Blazers games were 246, 248, and 242.
Don’t forget, Portland’s C.J. McCollum returns to action tonight after missing time with a foot fracture. That will give Portland a boost…and the score as well. The oddsmakers are expecting a lot of points tonight…and so am I. Play the Over.
