COACH RICK MLB PREVIEWS

PIRATES @ BRAVES 6/5/26

The Pittsburgh Pirates (33-28) travel to Truist Park to take on the Atlanta Braves (41-20) in a matchup featuring two potent offenses and a fascinating pitching duel between Mitch Keller and Martín Pérez. The Braves enter as home favorites, but the Pirates have shown significant grit recently, winning seven of their last ten games.

The Braves are the superior team statistically, ranking 3rd in MLB in runs per game (5.25) and 3rd in team ERA (3.16). While the Pirates have been playing well, the Braves' home dominance (19-10) and their success against right-handed pitching make them the definitive choice here.

MATCHUP ANALYSIS

While Mitch Keller has been solid, he has historically struggled against this specific Braves lineup. Current Braves hitters have a collective .276 batting average and a .353 wOBA against him over 115 plate appearances.

Atlanta's lineup features Ronald Acuña Jr. and Matt Olson, both of whom have elite historical numbers against Keller. The Braves' team slugging percentage of .435 ranks near the top of the league, providing an advantage over Pittsburgh's .402. Plus, Truist Park has been a fortress for Atlanta. They are 19-11 at home this season and 35-13 as favorites this season, showing they rarely slip up when expected to win.

GAME TOTAL ANALYSIS

Both teams feature top-tier offenses, with the Pirates ranking 5th in MLB in runs per game (5.1) and the Braves ranking 3rd (5.25). The pitching matchup suggests runs will be scored early and often.

Keller allowed 7 earned runs in his last start on May 30th. Martín Pérez has also shown vulnerability, giving up 4 earned runs in a recent start against Miami. In the last 10 head-to-head meetings between these two clubs, the Over has hit in 8 of those contests.

In terms of Park Factor, Truist Park is playing neutral (99 factor), but the humidity and warm June air in Atlanta typically favor the ball carrying, especially for power hitters like Matt Olson and Marcell Ozuna.

That’s another reason why this game will go Over the total.

TOP PLAYER PROPS

Olson has been a model of consistency and has a clear statistical "green light" in this matchup against Keller. Olson is 6-for-12 (.500 BA) in his career against Keller with a massive .581 wOBA and a home run.

He has recorded at least one hit in 3 of his last 5 games and 7 of his last 10. Olson is hitting .269 this season and has hit the Over 0.5 Hits in 74.6% of his 63 games played.

Any talk of Atlanta’s offense has to bring up Acuña, who is "heating up," according to recent news narratives. He’s hit four home runs in a five-game span recently. His history against Keller is elite. Acuña is 8-for-19 (.421 BA) in his career against Keller with 3 home runs and a .562 wOBA. He has hit the Over 0.5 Hits prop in 4 of his last 5 games, averaging 1.2 hits per game in that span.

Despite the tough matchup, Keller is a workhorse for the Pirates and has shown the ability to pitch deep into games recently. He has cleared his 16.5 Outs line (5.2 innings) in 4 of his last 5 starts and 7 of his last 10. Keller has hit the Over on this prop in 75% of his 12 starts this season, averaging 17.08 outs per game.

Even in his last start where he struggled with runs, he managed to stay in the game, and his 80% hit rate on the road this season suggests he can navigate the Braves' lineup long enough to record 17 outs.

NEW & INJURIES

The Braves offense is surging. Acuña is back and playing well, providing a massive boost to an already top-3 offense. Atlanta has won 5 of its last 7 games, scoring 40 runs over that span.

Despite being underdogs, Pittsburgh has won 5 of its last 6 games, including a statement 5-1 win over the Astros yesterday.

The Braves continue to play without catcher Sean Murphy (60-day IL), but the addition of Dominic Smith has helped stabilize the depth. The Pirates are missing catcher Joey Bart, which puts more pressure on their pitching staff to be perfect.

FREE PICK: RONALD ACUNA JR. OVER 1.5 HRR

Mitch Keller has horrible numbers against Atlanta. In his career, he has started 7 games against the Braves. He is 1-3 with a 7.31 ERA. In one start last season, Keller pitched just 3.2 innings and allowed only 1 ER. He threw 89 pitches and was taken out. Acuna ended that game 3-for-4 with a run scored and a walk. The Pirates would go on to win the game. Against Keller in his career, Acuna is batting .421 in 19 at-bats. He has three home runs. Over the last 7 days, Acuna is 7-for-21 (.333) with 6 walks, 4 home runs and 5 RBIs. Atlanta has won 5 of its last 7 and Acuna is a big reason why. He’ll get after Keller tonight.
