ACES vs. SPARKS 7/12/23

It’s the top team in the WNBA against the league’s worst tonight. The Las Vegas Aces are coming off a 97-78 drubbing of the Los Angeles Sparks. The Aces shot 54 percent from the floor and were led by All-Star A’ja Wilson who had a double-double with 25 points and 12 rebounds.

The win takes Las Vegas to 19-2 on the season. The Aces average a league-best 94 points per game on 50.5 percent (also the best in the WNBA) shooting from the field. Defensively, the Aces give up 78.57 points per game, giving them a ridiculous average scoring margin of over 16 points per game. Las Vegas’ most recent loss came on July 5 when the Aces lost by two to Dallas. The loss came two nights after the Aces beat Dallas 89-82.

Las Vegas has the league’s best offense and the league’s best defense. Four different players average at least 14.8 points per game. Wilson is the team leader at 19.7 per game. She is shooting 53.2 percent from the field.

Seattle is nowhere near the team it was a year ago when they finished fourth in the league standings at 22-14. Currently, the Storm is the WNBA’s worst team with a record of 4-16. They have lost their last seven straight games, including their last one against the Atlanta Dream. The Storm managed just 75 points and lost by ten. Surprisingly, Seattle is not the worst-scoring team in the WNBA. The Storm scores 79 points a game, which is the fourth-worst in the league.

Where Seattle really fails is on defense. The Storm allow the most points - 86.4 - per game of any team in the league. As a result, Seattle has the league’s worst point differential at -7.3 per game. That’s why the Storm has just four wins. Two of those came against Phoenix which is in 11th-place and one game ahead of Seattle in the league standings.

Las Vegas has won three straight and 12 of its last 13. The Aces are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games and 4-2 ATS in their last six on the road. Seattle is just 2-5 ATS in its last seven games.

There’s no question who wins this one. The Aces are a -2500 moneyline favorite, by the way. No sense in playing a side, but there is value on this total. Here’s what will happen tonight. The Aces will blow this game open by the second quarter. The starters will play some of the third quarter and then it’s just a matter of time before the bench finishes the game. With the game in hand, the Aces take their foot off the gas. The Storm has scored 76 or fewer points in four of its last five games. These two teams played earlier this season. Las Vegas won 96-63, the Storm scored 26 second-half points, and the total went Under. Expect more of the same tonight.
