KNICKS VS. 76ERS 5/2/24
The New York Knicks and coach Tom Thibodeau are facing the consequences of their deliberate decision not to foul late in Tuesday's thrilling loss as they get ready to play the host Philadelphia 76ers in Game 6 of their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series tonight.
Throughout the best-of-seven series, the 76ers have faced significant challenges. They began the series with two losses in New York before losing Game 4 at home. However, seventh-seeded Philadelphia has recovered from its losses, winning Game 3 125-114 and surviving to play another day with a 112-106 overtime victory in Game 5.
Josh Hart went to the free throw line with New York leading 96-94 on Tuesday. The second-seeded Knicks were just 15.3 seconds from a trip to the Eastern Conference semifinals. But, Hart only converted one of his two free throw attempts, failing to make it a two-possession game. The Knicks, who could have fouled on that final possession, then watched Tyrese Maxey sink a 35-footer to force an overtime and, ultimately, the 76ers' series-saving victory.
After suffering their first defeat in the series, the Knicks bounced back with a decisive Game 4 victory in Philadelphia on Sunday. That was when Jalen Brunson erupted for 47 points. Brunson almost single-handedly outscored the 76ers top two scorers. Joel Embiid had 27 points and Maxey added 23.
Maxey claimed he had also gained knowledge from the series' setbacks. In the fourth quarter of the Game 4 loss, he shot 2-for-8 overall and 0-for-2 from three-point range. The 76ers scored just 16 points in the final 12 minutes of that game. Maxey was much more aggressive in Game 5 and that helped push the Sixers to victory.
Despite the Game 5 loss, the Knicks are still 8-2 SU in their last 10 games and 6-3 SU in their last nine against Philadelphia. What’s interesting is that New York has been one of the better defensive teams in the NBA and they play at the slowest pace in the league. Despite that, the Over has cashed in 14 of the last 17 Knicks games. The Over is also 9-2 in New York’s last 11 road games.
