THUNDER VS. PELICANS 4/29/24
In the second and third games of their playoff series against the New Orleans Pelicans, the Oklahoma City Thunder dominated. With a 3-0 lead, the top-seeded Thunder will look to win Game 4 in New Orleans on Monday night in order to move on to the Western Conference semifinals.
In Game 2, OKC trailed 14–12 early on but went on a 21–6 run to gain the upper hand and win by 32 points. With just under four and a half minutes remaining in the second quarter of Game 3, the Thunder led by just one point. However, they scored 15 points in a row to seize the lead and win by 21.
OKC has improved over the last two games of the series. After surviving a missed, game-winning jumper by CJ McCollum of New Orleans in Game 1, the Thunder have outscored the Pelicans 230-177 in the last two games.
In Game 3, Gilgeous-Alexander scored a career-high 24 points, and he had plenty of help. Josh Giddey and Jalen Williams each had 21 points. Even though Luguentz Dort only had 12 points, he made three straight three-pointers in the second quarter as the Thunder started to gain momentum.
In addition to playing excellent defense against Pelicans forward Brandon Ingram, Dort has made 10 of 18 three-point attempts during the series. Although Ingram is New Orleans' top scoring option with leading scorer Zion Williamson out due to a hamstring injury, he is only averaging 16.3 points and shooting 41.5 percent from the field during the series.
The Pelicans have struggled offensively as a whole, shooting 40.3 percent from the field and 27.8 percent from three-point range during the series. Trey Murphy III has started in place of Williamson and has gone scoreless in the last two fourth quarters.
As his team attempts to accomplish something no NBA team has ever done before—surmount a 3-0 deficit to win a playoff series—New Orleans coach Willie Green had a straightforward message for his players. He simply told them that it’s not over.
Preventing it from being over is going to be difficult. Oklahoma City has won its last eight games in a row. Plus, the Thunder are 5-0 SU in their last five games against the Pelicans. New Orleans is now 1-5 SU in its last six games and what’s interesting is that Pelicans are 0-10 ATS the last ten times they have hosted Oklahoma City.
