TROJANS VS. DUCKS 11/11/23
No. 6 Oregon (8-1, 5-1) can move one step closer to it fourth Pac-12 championship game in five seasons with a win over USC on Saturday. Top among all one-loss teams, the Ducks (8-1, 5-1) maintained their position at No. 6 in the College Football Playoff rankings, which were released on Tuesday. After crushing Cal 63-19 last week, they enter Saturday’s game as winners of three straight, all by a margin of at least 14 points.
Ducks QB Bo Nix is a strong contender for the Heisman Trophy. He has passed for 2,723 yards on 235-of-301 passes, 25 touchdowns, and only two interceptions. At 47.4 points per game, Nix leads the country's most prolific scoring offense. He has also rushed for five touchdowns. Interestingly, at 45.5 ppg, USC is ranked second in the nation in scoring.
ReigningHeisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams and the Trojans (7-3, 5-2) have scored no fewer than 32 points in any of their conference games. In last week's 52-42 loss to Washington, Williams completed 27-of-35 passes for 312 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for another score. However, the USC defense gave up a season-high 52 points. It was the fifth time in six games that the Trojans gave up at least 40 points.
Due to USC's defensive shortcomings, coordinator Alex Grinch was fired on Sunday. To replace Grinch, inside linebackers coach Brian Odom and defensive line coach Shaun Nua were promoted to co-defensive coordinator. The final two games for the Trojans present a significant challenge for the new co-defensive coordinators. With the exception of Cal, no other Power 5 conference team has allowed more points per game than USC.
The Trojans allowed Washington RB Dillon Johnson to rush for 256 yards and four touchdowns last week. Oregon has Bucky Irving, one of the best ball carriers in the conference. He has nine touchdowns on the ground, averages 91.2 rushing yards per game, and averages 6.9 yards per carry.
USC has lost three of its last four games and is now 0-7 ATS in its last seven. The Trojans are 1-4 SU and ATS in their last five games against the Ducks. Oregon is 9-1 SU in its last ten games and 7-1-1 ATS in its last nine. The Ducks have won six straight at home.

Last week, USC-Washington closed at a total of 76. That game went way over with 94 total points. Now, we have the top two scoring offenses in the country. More of the same, right? Wrong. What both USC and Washington lack is a quality defense. Ducks head coach Dan Lanning is a defensive guy and Oregon is the No. 10 team in the nation in scoring defense. They allow an average 15.6 points per game. In their last two games, the Ducks have allowed just 25 total points. They gave up 19 to Cal. Cal scored 49 against the Trojans. In the last two head-to-head meetings with the Ducks, the Trojans have managed 24 points. Oregon will definitely pile up some points against USC’s garbage defense, but USC is going to have a tough time getting close to its scoring average.
