San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills | Sunday, December 1, 2024
Sunday Night Football this week sees the 49ers travel to upstate New York to face a Buffalo Bills team that have won their last six, including a thrilling 30-21 victory over the Chiefs in Week 10. Bills QB Josh Allen put the exclamation point on that win with a late 4th down touchdown run which sealed the victory, and put the Bills right in the mix to be the one seed in the AFC this year.
However, their opponents this week are suffering a tough campaign, largely down to the amount of injuries suffered throughout the season. This year has seen San Francisco suffer major injuries to Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle, Dre Greenlaw, and Charvarius Ward amongst others, with Kyle Shanahan having his work cut out to field a competing team. Last week, the team was without QB Brock Purdy and DE Nick Bosa, contributing to a blowout 38-10 loss in Green Bay, the team’s heaviest defeat in six years.
San Francisco are the reigning champions of the NFC, but they’ve struggled this season, and sit at 5-6, following back-to-back losses to Seattle and Green Bay. There’s no doubt that this team does have the firepower to cause any team problems, but in the last two weeks, they’ve failed to crack 300 yards of total offense, putting up just 27 points across the two games combined.
If Brock Purdy is still out for this one, it looks like a long night for them at Highmark Stadium. Last week saw backup Brandon Allen throw for just 199 yards and a passer rating of 76.7 as they were stifled by the Packers for most of the 60 minutes at Lambeau Field. On the defensive side, the Niners also struggled, giving up 106 yards and three touchdowns on the ground to Josh Jacobs, while watching Jordan Love post an efficient performance through the air.
As for Buffalo, they might be the best team in football on current form, and are well-rested after a bye week last weekend. The Bills are seven-point favorites for a reason here, but the man of the hour is MVP candidate Josh Allen, who has been unbelievable in recent weeks. Allen and his Bills have put up 30 points in five straight games, and few would bet against them doing so again, with the team currently having the league’s 3rd highest-scoring offense.
Despite lacking a true WR1, Allen has relied on a platoon led by Khali Shakir and rookie Keon Coleman, who have 1,016 receiving yards between them. Backed up by RB James Cook’s 778 scrimmage yards and 11 touchdowns, this Bills team is a real threat to secure that one seed, and to do real damage in January.
San Fran remains trapped in the thick of a messy NFC West and have the league’s fifth toughest remaining strength of schedule at .591. A shock victory here would be huge in keeping their playoff hopes alive, but if not, this season might just slip away from them.
