Although Jackson Arnold was brought in as Auburn's new quarterback, coach Hugh Freeze is considering playing three signal-callers in Friday night's season opener. When the Tigers play Baylor tonight, Stanford transfer Ashton Daniels and highly regarded freshman Deuce Knight are also anticipated to see action at quarterback because Arnold, an Oklahoma transfer, didn't outplay the competition in preseason camp.
After obtaining a NIL deal through the transfer portal that was reportedly close to $2.5 million, Arnold—a former five-star recruit—was anticipated to be the starting quarterback. He hasn't been producing much on the practice field this month, though, and only averaged 5.8 yards per passing attempt with the Sooners last season.
Freeze admitted that the defense was occasionally instructed to back off in order to help Arnold. "The No. 1 priority in practice is for our quarterback to leave that field confident," Freeze stated. While he may be confident, he may not be fully prepared to handle what should be a better Baylor defense.
Knight demonstrated all the required skills in camp, and Daniels led Stanford the last two years with 21 touchdowns against 20 interceptions. If he can fix the interceptions, Daniels could be a solid alternative should Arnold not pan out.
"Without giving away too much, I think there's a place for both of those guys that you can play to their strengths," Freeze stated in reference to the strategy against Baylor. "We won't hesitate to take that action. Knight has a distinct poise for a freshman and is capable of making any throw on the field.
In Freeze's two seasons at Auburn, the Tigers have yet to secure a winning season. They finished 6-7 in 2023 and 5-7 last season. The Auburn faithful wants to see a big jump in that win total this year.
With Sawyer Robertson returning to the starting lineup for the second consecutive season, Baylor (8-5 in 2024) has no quarterbacking issues. Last season, he passed for 3,071 yards, 28 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. The Bears were significantly better last year than the disappointing squad that finished 3-9 in 2023, in large part because of Robertson's improvement.
In 2024, Baylor won its final six games of the regular season before falling to LSU 44-31 in the Texas Bowl. The Bears gave up 28 points or more in 5 of their last 7 games of the 2024 season.

This total opened at 56.5 months ago. It reached a high of 59.5 before ticking downward. There’s no question that Baylor can score, but the Auburn 3-3-5 defense is legit. They should be able to put enough pressure on Sawyer Robertson to slow down the Baylor offense. On the opposite end, Auburn may have some QB issues and, while their offense should be better in 2025, don’t expect them to light up the scoreboard just yet.
