Two AFC powerhouses will clash in the early slate on Sunday, pitching the 3-1 Houston Texans against the 3-1 Buffalo Bills. Entering the season, the Houston Texans were the trendy pick to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl, whereas the Buffalo Bills had fallen well out of favor due to their offseason departures. Now, as things stand after four weeks, both teams appear to be neck and neck within the AFC, based on record and on-field performances so far.
Buffalo was written off by many because of the losses of key players such as Stefon Diggs, Gabe Davis, and many more veterans from the defense. The common perception was that Josh Allen would struggle without a clear number-one receiver, but he has answered those doubts nicely by sharing the ball between his versatile group of pass catchers. Khalil Shakir, Dalton Kincaid, Keon Coleman, James Cook, and Mack Hollins all have 10 or more targets this year, with each of the first four of those players already over the 100-yard mark.
Allen himself has completed 69% of his passes for 814 yards, seven touchdowns, and zero interceptions, while also still proving as effective with his legs as ever. This talented defense was neutralized by the Ravens in Week Four, and they now have to go up against a Houston defense that is giving up the fifth-fewest yards per game with 273.8. Head coach DeMeco Ryans is one of the best defensive minds in the NFL, and you can be sure that he will have his boys prepared for this one.
When Houston has the ball, no player is more dangerous in the league right now than Nico Collins, who leads the league in receiving yards with 489. He is an absolute beast, and we are yet to find something he can’t do. He towers over most cornerbacks thanks to his 6-foot-4 frame, and at 222 pounds, even linebackers bounce off him. The fact that he is a savvy route runner and has incredible hands makes him one of the best wide receivers in the NFL. He hauled in 11 receptions for 151 yards against Jacksonville, proving to be the difference in what ended up as a four-point victory.
We know that CJ Stroud will be looking his way regularly, and his matchup against the Bills' secondary could be the key to the game. Buffalo has conceded the sixth-fewest passing yards with 661 and has notched the fifth-most interceptions with four. Cornerback Christian Benford is in the midst of a breakout season, so this matchup could be box-office.
The problem for Buffalo is that even if they keep Nico Collins quiet, they also have to deal with Stefon Diggs, who has 233 yards and three total touchdowns on the season already, and Tank Dell, if healthy, who is also a dangerous weapon. This one should be fun, with the added bonus of it being a Stefon Diggs revenge game.
