BLUE JAYS @ MARINERS 10/15/25
The Seattle Mariners, who are now 2-0 in the American League Championship Series following victories in Toronto, can use backup catcher Mitch Garver to gain some perspective. Garver is aware that the seven-game series is far from over, as Game 3 will take place in Seattle tonight. Garver played for the Texas Rangers in 2023, when they defeated Houston in the first two ALCS games.
Garver thought his team had the series locked up. However, the Rangers dropped all three games at home and had to bounce back to win Games 6 and 7 in Houston.
"The most important thing, in my opinion, is to keep doing the little things and never let the foot off the gas. Particularly when you're up two, you can't just take a pitch off," Garver stated. "You have to continue to do the little things right and execute and try to scratch one (run) off every inning."
Last Friday, the Mariners defeated visiting Detroit 3-2 in the decisive Game 5 of their AL Division Series, thanks to a single by Jorge Polanco in the 15th inning. They had to travel to Toronto to play the ALCS on Sunday, but they won the first game 3-1 thanks to home runs from Cal Raleigh and two runs from Polanco. Josh Naylor, Polanco, and Julio Rodriguez all hit home runs as the Mariners won 10-3 on Monday, taking a series lead going into the game.
The Blue Jays only scored four runs in the first two games of this series, compared to 34 in their four-game ALDS victory over the New York Yankees.
"Always going to have optimism about this team," stated John Schneider, manager of the Blue Jays. Looking at it holistically, I believe we need to find ways to increase our offensive output. It basically boils down to the fact that they simply made more swings than we did in the previous two games.
The 2020 AL Cy Young Award winner, right-hander Shane Bieber (4-2, 3.57 ERA in the regular season), will start for Toronto on Wednesday against Seattle righty George Kirby (10-8, 4.21).
After being acquired from Cleveland at the trade deadline, Bieber made seven regular-season starts for the Blue Jays this season, including one against the Yankees in the ALDS. Bieber missed almost the entire 2024 season due to Tommy John surgery. Bieber gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits in 2⅓ innings of Game 3's 9–6 loss. He was not involved in the decision. Bieber has made seven career starts against Seattle and is 2-2 with a 2.30 ERA in 43 innings.
Kirby didn’t pick up a decision in either of his playoff starts. He pitched well, giving up just three runs on 9 hits in 10 innings, with one walk and 14 strikeouts. Kirby started Games 1 and 5 of the ALDS against the Tigers. He has made three previous starts against the Blue Jays and is 0-1 with a 6.28 ERA in 14⅓ innings.
In order to send the series back to Toronto, the Blue Jays must win two of three games in Seattle, which puts them in a vulnerable position. The two teams have played eight times this season. Each team has four wins.

FREE PICK: SHANE BIEBER OVER 1.5 EARNED RUNS
Bieber is 4-2 with a respectable 3.57 ERA for the season. But, remember, his season didn’t start until late August and he only made 7 regular season starts. In his lone postseason start, which was also on the road against the Yankees, Bieber lasted 2⅔ innings. He gave up 5 hits, walked a batter, and allowed 3 runs, 2 of which were earned. Bieber pitched well at the end of the regular season, but he still has given up at least 2 ER in each of his last 3 starts.
