Cleveland Browns vs. Washington Commanders | Sunday, October 6th, 2024

This afternoon clash between Cleveland and Washington is featuring two franchises that are at completely different ends of the fan optimism scale as they stand. The Cleveland Browns believed they were entering the season with a Super Bowl-caliber roster and were hoping that they were finally going to get the version of Deshaun Watson that could take them to the promised land. Instead, Watson has been putrid, and the rest of the team has underwhelmed, producing a 1-3 record.

Over in Washington, however, fans cannot believe their luck. Not even the most optimistic Commanders fan could’ve anticipated Jayden Daniels performing as well as he has, and with the team now sitting pretty atop the NFC East table with a 3-1 record, do they dare to believe? Daniels has already passed for 897 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception, in addition to rushing for 218 more yards and four scores on the ground. The most impressive part of his game, though, has been his 82.1% completion rate, including a new NFL rookie single-game record of 91.3%, registered in Week 3.

Daniels is looking after the ball, is precise with his passing, can launch it deep, and his elite college rushing ability has translated very well. It really is an exciting time to be a Washington fan. This, however, is going to be by far his toughest test. The Browns have a very talented defensive unit, and Daniels has never gone up against a beast like Myles Garrett. With more Pro Bowl talent elsewhere for Cleveland in the linebacker and secondary rooms, Daniels is going to be up against it. If he can pass this test, then we could be in for another jaw-dropping rookie season similar to what we got from C.J. Stroud last year.

Things have not been quite so entertaining when the Cleveland Browns are on offense. Deshaun Watson has completed just 61.5% of his passes for 727 yards, four touchdowns, and three interceptions, and is regularly making the wrong decisions when dropping back to pass. Week 4 was actually his best game of the season, but the Browns still found a way to ruin the game through some embarrassing drops and other sloppy mistakes.

They just can’t get out of their own way at the moment, leading to star wide receiver Amari Cooper having just 148 yards across the first four games of the season, and Deshaun Watson leading the league with 19 sacks already. Washington is about as friendly of a pass defense as you can go up against, conceding the fifth-most passing yards to wide receivers this year, with 703, and by far the most receiving touchdowns with 10. Washington’s eight sacks on the year also put them among the worst in the league, which means this matchup is going to be easier than most that Watson will face this year. Whether he can make the most of that remains to be seen.

This matchup is an intriguing test for both quarterbacks on the field, but for polar opposite reasons. Almost everybody has discarded any hope of Watson returning to his previous league-leading form, but he at least has an opportunity against a weak pass defense here to get his season back on track. On the other side of the field, everybody is lauding Jayden Daniels as the next big thing, yet he is going to have his work cut out against one of the best defenses in the NFL. It’s good vibes in Washington versus bad vibes in Cleveland, and there is a lot on the line for the latter.
