COUGARS @ BEARCATS 11/22/25
When No. 11 BYU visits struggling Cincinnati on Saturday night, it hopes to maintain its ascent up the rankings and guarantee a spot in the College Football Playoff and the Big 12 championship game. If Colorado defeats Arizona State, Utah defeats Kansas State, or TCU defeats Houston, the Cougars (9-1, 6-1 Big 12) will secure a spot in the Big 12 championship game in Dallas on December 6.
Cincinnati (7-3, 5-2) had aspirations of making it to the Big 12 title game and making it to the CFP, but they enter Saturday night on a two-game losing streak. The Bearcats were stunned at home by Arizona last week, 30-24, and fell out of the Top 25 rankings after losing 45-14 to No. 12 Utah on November 1.
In the Big 12 rankings, BYU is one game ahead of Cincinnati, Houston, Arizona State, and Utah, all of which have 5-2 conference records, and half a game behind Texas Tech. The Cougars, who are ranked No. 11 in the CFP rankings, would be very close to making it to the 12-team playoff. The Cougars improved their postseason prospects last week by defeating TCU at home, 44-13, after suffering their first defeat at Texas Tech.
Bear Bachmeier, a rookie quarterback, rushed for 17 yards and scored a touchdown in addition to passing for 296 yards. He tied the school record for the most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in a single season with Zach Wilson (2020), Taysom Hill (2013), and Steve Young (1982) with his tenth touchdown this season.
This season, Bachmeier has passed for 2,177 yards and 13 touchdowns. His 10 running touchdowns are tied for second among all Big 12 players, and his 479 rushing yards rank third among Big 12 quarterbacks.
"I liked the way they bounced back after last week," stated Kalani Sitake, head coach of BYU. "All week long, I had a different sense of urgency than they had. That everything worked out makes me happy. We only needed to pull everything together in all three phases, in my opinion.
The BYU defense is tied for fourth place in the conference with 25 sacks and leads the Big 12 with 14 interceptions.
After two subpar games in the team's last two defeats, Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Sorsby wants to get back on track. Over the past two games, Sorsby has only completed 26 of 61 throws, recording two touchdowns and three interceptions. In the first eight games of the season, he had 20 touchdown passes and only one interception.
Since No. 6 Houston in 2016, the No. 11 Cougars are the highest-ranked club to visit Nippert Stadium. On senior night, Bearcats head coach Scott Satterfield will rely on his seasoned leadership as Cincinnati looks to regain late-season momentum.
"The message to the guys is we're facing some adversity now," Satterfield stated. "Leading is simple when everything is going well. How are we going to lead now that we are in adversity? With that, I've challenged our guys. I would anticipate that those folks will come in and determine what we need to improve on since we have excellent leadership."
