The L.A. Chargers will host the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs in Week 4, and so far this week quarterback Justin Herbert is yet to be a full participant.

The starting QB re-aggravated an ankle sprain in Week 3, and limped out of the Chargers' loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. If he can’t go this weekend, they’ll have to turn to Taylor Heinicke, who threw his first two passes in Chargers colors on the weekend.

Of course, Jim Harbaugh has already worked to establish one of the league's most effective run games, which should support the absence of a starting quarterback if that is to be their reality. JK Dobbins has been electric in the first three weeks of the season, with two games of 130+ rushing yards to start the year, and top three in rushing yards through three games.

While the ground game has been extremely efficient so far this year, the Chargers are also dealing with injuries to both offensive tackles including rookie sensation Joe Alt.

He’s dealing with an MCL sprain and is set to miss some time, while left tackle Rashawn Slater has a pec injury. Joey Bosa is on the injury report too, and yet to practice, and the Chargers are very quickly looking pretty banged up. To add further insult, safety Derwin James was suspended for a game following Week 3, due to repeated offenses jeopardizing player safety. To say L.A. could be shorthanded this weekend would be an understatement.

That doesn’t bode well for hosting the Chiefs in Week 4, who haven’t played their best football yet this year and are still 3-0. Much has been made of Travis Kelce’s disappointing start to the season, with just 69 yards total through the first three games of the season.

Despite that, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs have been finding a way. They held off the Ravens in Week 1, scraped past the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 2, and then held the Atlanta Falcons off late to make it 3-0 on the season.

They too are missing a couple of pieces, namely running back Isiah Pacheco landing on injured reserve. Rookie Carson Steele was great in Week 3, with 72 rushing yards on 17 carries against Atlanta, and a running style that emulates that of Pacheco.

The clear star of their offense right now is Rashee Rice, who’s 288 yards through three games make him the only receiver on the team to clear 100. He has two touchdowns, and three times as many receptions as anybody else on the Chiefs offense.

It would be fair to say they haven’t quite found it yet, ranking 14th in average yards of offense (328.0), and 21st in third down conversions (35%). They don’t feature in the top ten either running or passing the football, but there is still plenty of football to play before it matters the most in the playoffs.
