LA DODGERS @ TORONTO (LAD -150, 7.5)
The Los Angeles Dodgers play the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 1 of the World Series tonight. It's the start of the Fall Classic with two teams vying to be the best team in the sport in 2025. Los Angeles won Game 4 of the NL Championship Series at home last Friday, 5-1, sweeping Milwaukee. Toronto won the AL Championship Series four games to three on Monday night after rallying to defeat Seattle 4-3 in Game 7.
Last Friday night, Los Angeles won Game 4 at home to complete a four-game sweep of the Brewers, bringing their postseason record to 9-1. Now that they are traveling north of the border, the Dodgers are attempting to maintain that momentum. Shohei Ohtani was the star of Game 4 of the NL Championship Series against Milwaukee. He set the tone both on the mound and at the plate. Ohtani (three runs, three RBI) led the Dodgers with three hits, all home runs, and Will Smith (run) contributed two more. Ohtani also threw six scoreless innings, giving up two hits, three walks, and ten strikeouts in earning his second victory of the postseason.
After making 11 regular-season starts, Blake Snell makes his fourth postseason start. In 61.1 innings pitched during the regular season, he was 5-4 with a 2.35 ERA, 1.255 WHIP, 26 walks, and 72 strikeouts. Snell has a 3-0 record in the postseason after 21 innings pitched, with a 0.86 ERA, a 0.524 WHIP, five walks, and 28 strikeouts.
Snell made his last start on October 13, earning the victory in Game 1 of the NL Championship Series on the road against Milwaukee. He pitched eight scoreless innings, giving up just one hit while striking out ten batters and allowing no walks. Los Angeles won the game 2-1.
Snell starts for the 17th time in his career against Toronto. He has pitched 79 innings against them and is 5-4 with a 2.39 ERA, 1.228 WHIP, 42 walks, and 97 strikeouts. Snell has made eight career starts at Rogers Centre and is 3-3 with a 2.63 ERA, a 1.327 WHIP, 20 walks, and 43 strikeouts in 37.2 innings pitched.
For the first time since 1993, Toronto advanced to a World Series. They fell behind 2-0 to Seattle in the AL Championship Series before rallying to tie the series. The Blue Jays ended up winning Games 6 and 7 at home to advance.
The Blue Jays now want to take the lead early in the World Series and maintain that momentum. Daulton Varsho (RBI) was the only player with two hits as Toronto finished with ten against Seattle in Game 7 on Monday night. George Springer delivered the game-winning blow in the seventh inning with a three-run homer (his fourth of the postseason).
The Blue Jays will start rookie Trey Yesavage tonight. He made just three major league starts during the regular season. This will be his fourth postseason start. In 14 innings of work during the regular season, he was 1-0 with a 3.21 ERA, a 1.429 WHIP, seven walks, and 16 strikeouts. He has pitched 15 innings and is 2-1 in the postseason with a 4.20 ERA, 1.113 WHIP, seven walks, and 22 strikeouts.
In his most recent start, Yesavage earned the victory against the Mariners at home in Game 6 of the AL Championship Series. In the 6-2 Blue Jays victory, he pitched 5.2 innings, giving up two runs on six hits, three walks, and seven strikeouts. He is 2-1 with a 4.20 ERA, 1.113 WHIP, seven walks, and 22 strikeouts in 15 innings pitched over his last three starts. This will be his first-ever start against the Dodgers. He has made five starts at the Rogers Centre in his career, four of which have occurred during the postseason.
In the postseason, Los Angeles has been outstanding on the mound, giving up just one run in five consecutive games. In their last eight postseason games, the Dodgers have given up just 13 runs.
The Under is 35-48-2 in Dodgers road games this season. The Under has cashed in each of the last five for LA. It's interesting because the Dodgers averaged 5.06 runs per game during the season. That number is down to 4.60 during the postseason. The Blue Jays have averaged 6.45 runs per game in the playoffs.
FREE PICK: BLAKE SNELL OVER 1.5 EARNED RUNS
The key thing in this series may be strikeouts. We know the Blue Jays don't strike out a lot (#1, 6.72 K/gm), but Dodgers pitchers like Snell are strikeout-dependent. Tonight, Snell's K prop is set at 6.5 despite the fact that he whiffed 10 Blue Jays back on Aug. 9. He's only given up a total of 3 ER over his last 6 starts. That's why it's interesting that his ER prop is juiced to the Over at 1.5. Now, Snell can still pitch outstanding, but he could give up 2 ER. With the way Toronto has been hitting in the postseason and the fact that they are at home for Game 1, I'll back Snell to give up a pair of ER.
