Detroit leads Cleveland by one game in the race for the AL Central Division title. The winner is going to the playoffs and whoever finishes in second place is going home. That makes this series even more important.
Tarik Skubal starts for Detroit. He is the likely AL Cy Young award winner, but he did just lose to the Guardians last week. He pitched well - 6 IP, 1 ER - but the Tigers couldn't back him up. In fact, the Tigers haven't really backed him up at all over his last four starts. Detroit has lost three of them.
Gavin Williams gets the start for the Guardians. He's had a solid season (11-5, 3.06) and he's been really effective over his last four starts. Cleveland won all four games and Williams is 3-0 with a 1.44 ERA. One of those wins was a 4-0 victory over Detroit last Wednesday. It's also worth noting that Williams has pitched twice against the Tigers this season. He's pitched 11 scoreless innings and Detroit has really struggled against RHP in September.
With the total now down to 6.5, we're expecting a close game. That gives the advantage to the home team that has the better bullpen. Watch out for Cleveland in this series. Even if they don't win tonight, this is a likely one-run game.
