The Guardians came through last night against Detroit's best pitcher. Tarik Skubal did pitch well, but the Tigers bullpen couldn't save him. Tonight, Cleveland gets a crack at Jack Flaherty. Flaherty is not the best pitcher in the Detroit rotation. He is 8-14 and has a 4.60 ERA.
Flaherty has gas can potential. Kansas City got him for 8 earned runs a couple weeks ago. The White Sox plated 4 ER in 4.1 innings on Sept. 5. Then, there is his last start. Flaherty avoided the lighter igniting the flame against these very same Guardians.
Last Wednesday, he pitched 5 innings and allowed just 3 hits. He did walk 4 batters though. Flaherty avoided disaster in the third inning when he walked two and even threw a wild pitch but managed to get out of the inning with just 1 run allowed.
The Guardians won last night to give them the lead in the AL Central race. Just two weeks ago, Detroit held a 9.5-game lead in the division. Cleveland responded by going 11-3 over their last 14.
They'll have Tanner Bibee on the mound tonight. His numbers for the season aren't great - 11-11, 4.34 ERA - but his recent form has been outstanding. Cleveland has won his last 3 starts. All three were quality starts, including a complete game shutout of the White Sox with 10 strikeouts on Sept. 12 and last week's 6-inning, 1-ER, 8-K performance against the Tigers.
