Last season, this bet went 15-3. If you remember, we played it the entire season and we played it because it's all about coaching. Mike Tomlin has 19 seasons as an NFL head coach under his belt. He is a master of making halftime adjustments, especially defensively.
That's what this third quarter wager is all about - coaching. The Jets will have first-time head coach Aaron Glenn. He has plenty of NFL coaching experience, but never as a head coach. I'll take the more experienced guy in this situation.
The game total is the lowest of all 16 games in Week 1. I would expect a lower-scoring, defensive battle. Tomlin will make any adjustments necessary and then turn the third quarter over to his defense, which got a few upgrades in the offseason with the additions of Darius Slay and Jalen Ramsey.
Last year, Pittsburgh led the NFL in third quarter defense. The Steelers held opponents to an average of just 2.2 points in the third quarter last season. It's a new season, but it's still Mike Tomlin and a number of the guys that played on last year's Steeler defense. We'll keep playing this one until it stops filling my bankroll.
