BUFFALOES @ COUGARS 9/12/25
Colorado's starting quarterback will remain a mystery when it travels to Houston tonight to play both teams' Big 12 opener. Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders refuted rumors that Ryan Staub would start.
Last Saturday, the Buffaloes (1-1) defeated Delaware 31-7 at home using a three-quarterback rotation, but Staub was the driving force behind the Colorado passing attack. The sophomore connected on 7-of-10 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns, despite being Colorado’s third-string quarterback.
Sanders stated, "I'm not confirming nothing to y'all," and he intends to commit to a full-time starter. "That's not who we are. We're doing fine. Our men are competent. Staub has performed admirably and received most of the reps. However, I haven't yet decided on a starter or made that assessment."
Coach Willie Fritz stated his defense, which is ranked No. 4 nationally, will get ready for the Colorado system overall, even though it is unclear which quarterback the Cougars (2-0) will face.
"You look at the plays that were called, and they played all three guys this past game against Delaware," Fritz explained. "One of the guys in their offense does something different from the other. However, an NFL offensive coordinator (Pat Shurmur, for several teams) oversees their offense. They are excellent at doing a variety of things, including combining runs and passes.
Houston defeated Rice 35–9 on the ground while Staub dominated Delaware with spectacular plays from the air. With 13 rushes, Dean Connors gained 132 yards and two touchdowns for Houston in the win over Rice. Conner Weigman, the quarterback for the Cougars, had a passing and rushing touchdown and was 15-for-22 for 188 yards.
"They are doing some remarkable things offensively, moving the ball," Sanders stated. "One of their running backs is capable of hitting it hard. And he's gone as soon as he hits it. They have defensive players who can cover and receivers who can do the job well.
Houston has won and covered in both games thus far this season. They’ve done it with a defense that has limited opponents to 186 total yards and 4.5 points per game.

Houston’s offense is built around the run, but Weigman gives the Cougars the ability to throw the ball. They don’t throw much, but Weigman has thrown at least one TD in both games so far this season. The Cougars are not a team that scores a ton of points either, but they are averaging 31 points a game. Colorado will be the best defense they have faced, but the Cougars can get to 21.
