COMMANDERS @ BUCCANEERS 1/12/25
Jayden Daniels is making quite a name for himself in his rookie season, earning a reputation as a cool-headed quarterback. As he prepares to lead the Commanders into a critical NFC wild-card game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he seems as unfazed as ever. The Commanders have been on a roll, riding a five-win streak heading into tonight’s game. It’s also the fourth time in franchise history Washington has at least a dozen regular-season wins.
Daniels deserves much of the credit for the successful streak. He’s got 3,568 passing yards and 25 touchdowns against nine interceptions He’s also rushed for 891 yards and six more scores. Daniels has been extremely valuable to the Commanders this season.
The Commanders haven't won a playoff game since the 2005 season, when they were coached by Hall of Fame member Joe Gibbs. However, their most recent playoff game was a loss in the 2020 season against the Buccaneers, the same team they face again in tonight’s wild-card game.
Coach Dan Quinn is cognizant of the Buccaneers' form. Tampa Bay has won six of its past seven games. Quinn said Washington has had an impressive season led by quarterback Baker Mayfield, with excellent support from rookie Bucky Irving.
This wild-card game could be a high-scoring affair, with Tampa Bay and Washington ranking fourth and fifth in scoring, respectively. Players on both sides are battling injuries, but key ones, including Antoine Winfield Jr. for Tampa Bay and Marshon Lattimore for Washington, are expected to make returns.
Daniels has been the driving force behind the Commanders' success this season, showcasing his skills as a dynamic and versatile quarterback. His ability to throw accurate passes and make game-changing runs has made him a dual-threat on offense.
But Daniels is not working alone. He has an impressive supporting cast of talented players who have helped him elevate his game to new heights. Wide receivers Michael Thomas and Terry McLaurin have been reliable targets for Daniels. Running back Antonio Gibson leads a solid ground game. On defense, edge rusher Chase Young has been a disruptive force, constantly pressuring opposing quarterbacks.
The Commanders are also benefitting from the coaching expertise of Quinn, who took over as head coach this season. Under Quinn's leadership, the team has shown significant improvement and cohesion, leading to their current playoff berth.
Tampa Bay is 6-1 SU in its last seven games. The Bucs are also 6-3 ATS in their last nine. Washington is 5-0 SU in its last five games and 5-2 SU in its last seven on the road. The Commanders have won just 3 of 11 games against the Buccaneers when playing in Tampa Bay.

JAYDEN DANIELS OVER 21.5 COMPLETIONS
The Commanders are likely to take advantage of a poor Tampa Bay pass defense and do what they do best - throw the ball. The Bucs play one-high pass coverage 59.3 percent of the time. That ranks sixth in the NFL. Daniels ranks in the top-8 among QBs against one-high pass coverages like Cover 1 and Cover 3. Tampa Bay’s secondary is a mess. Three guys are on IR and three more are questionable. The Bucs D ranks 23rd in DVOA and allows the most completions (24.6). Daniels will take advantage.
