DODGERS @ PADRES 6/9/25
Manny Machado, the third baseman for the Padres, claims that time stopped during San Diego's road trip, even though the calendar indicates it is early June. Machado was reminded of postseason baseball after a 4-3 week away from home. Machado provided the only runs in a 1-0 victory in Milwaukee on Sunday when he hit his 10th home run of the season.
In their first matchup of the season, Machado and the Padres will return home to begin a much-anticipated three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, their biggest rivals in the National League West.
Padres' fans may be left without fingernails if those games are similar to those they played in San Francisco and Milwaukee. San Diego's 2-0 victory on Friday night was the only game that wasn't decided by a single run during the trip.
San Diego’s last 13 of 14 games have been decided by a margin of one or two runs. The Padres, who have won four of their last five series to stay within a game of Los Angeles, appear to be succeeding at playing close games.
Despite only scoring six runs, the Padres won two of three games in Milwaukee over the weekend. Pitching was the key. In 15.2 innings, their starting pitchers gave up no runs. None of the three were involved in the decisions.
Nick Pivetta (6-2, 3.16 ERA) will be used by San Diego to maintain the starting pitching schedule. After working more than six innings and giving up five runs off six hits and a walk with five strikeouts, he was given a no-decision in Wednesday's 6-5 loss to San Francisco.
Dustin May (3-4, 4.09), a hard-throwing right-hander who last pitched on June 2 in a 4-3 home loss to the New York Mets in 10 innings, will counter for Los Angeles. May gave up six hits, two runs, and two walks in six innings while striking out five against the Mets. He was not involved in the decision. In 12 career games (nine starts), he is 2-4 against San Diego with a 3.36 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 59 innings.
With a 7-3 victory in St. Louis on Sunday, the Dodgers avoided a three-game sweep and maintained their lead in the division. Clayton Kershaw earned his first victory of the season with five strong innings of one-run ball and seven strikeouts.
Los Angeles defeated the Padres 2-0 in a decisive fifth game of the 2024 NL Division Series. After falling behind 2-1 in the series, they shut out the Padres over the final 24 innings. They went on to beat the Mets in six games in the NLCS and, of course, defeated the Yankees in five games to win the World Series.

COACH RICK FREE PICK:
DUSTIN MAY OVER 17.5 OUTS
May has had a couple rough starts this season, but he has pitched well lately. The Dodgers won 2 of his last 3 starts and May pitched a full six innings in 2 of the 3 games. He’s gone Over this prop line in 3 of his last 5 trips to the mound and will face a Padres lineup that is coming off a weekend in which they scored a total of six runs. San Diego has scored more than 3 runs just twice in their last 10 games.
