Philadelphia vs. Dallas | Sunday, November 10, 2024
The Dallas Cowboys lost quarterback Dak Prescott to injured reserve this week, with a hamstring injury now considered to be significantly worse than originally estimated. The quarterback's nightmare adds to a long list of injury woes Dallas have faced already this year, piling on the misery for a fan base expecting much more out of their team in 2024.
With that in mind, it's a terrible time to see the Philadelphia Eagles up next on the schedule. Saquon Barkley is undoubtedly the star, and he’s no stranger to playing the Cowboys. The former Giants running back is enjoying life behind a much improved offensive line, and could clear 1,000 yards on the season with a 75+ yard performance here against Dallas.
While there have been some questionable play calls in Philly, so much so the fans were booing despite the victory last weekend. Their record remains 6-2, and they’re very much contenders for the division, and in the playoffs.
A.J. Brown was back at practice this week following a knock he picked up in the weekend's win, and DeVonta Smith will be looking to build on what was a sensational touchdown catch against Jacksonville.
The Eagles need to be careful though, as they very nearly let a big lead and a first half shutout wash away in the second against the Jaguars. An endzone interception from Nakobe Dean saved them at the buzzer, and they extended themselves to six wins.
Sunday could be a big day for the run game against a beaten up Cowboys defense. The Eagles are #1 in rushing attempts per game (35.1), and second in total rushing yards (174.8). They score more rushing touchdowns than any other team in football, and Saquon Barkley’s presence has warned teams off of focusing too heavily on Jalen Hurts in the red zone, which allows easier scoring opportunities for the dual threat QB.
The Cowboys defense has been a disaster under Mike Zimmer, allowing 28.1 points per game (31st), 364.8 yards per game (27th), 76.92% conversion in the red zone (32nd), and 3.3 touchdowns per game (30th). In other words, their defense is failing miserably.
All of that is only accentuated by the fact that their run game is non-existent, putting all the pressure on the quarterback and forcing throws down the field in less than ideal down and distances. With a patchwork group of running backs, the Cowboys are managing a measly 3.8 yards per carry (30th), and just 82 rushing yards per game (31st).
Circumstances aren’t exactly glowing in Dallas, and Cooper Rush will now start the next four games at least as Dak Prescott looks to get healthy. A major challenge awaits.
