Atlanta vs Minnesota

The Falcons will face one of their toughest matchups of the season this Sunday when they travel to Minneapolis to face the Minnesota Vikings. The Falcons currently sit atop the NFC South at 6-6, while the 10-2 Vikings are trying to claw their way to the top of the NFC North, one game behind the Detroit Lions.

The Falcons are desperate for a win this Sunday, as they could lose possession of the first-place spot in the NFC South with a loss, and are also looking to snap their three-game losing streak. Atlanta has only scored a combined total of 36 points in those three losses, and has allowed opposing teams to score a combined 75 points throughout that same stretch.

The Vikings on the other hand have been rolling past their opponents, and are currently on an impressive five-game win streak. The Vikings defense picked off Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray twice in their 23-22 victory last Sunday, as their defense continued to stun opposing offenses. They allow just 18.3 points per game, fifth best in the NFL, and have held opponents to just 5.1 yards per play, sixth best in the league.

The Minnesota offense has been no slouch either, averaging over eight yards per pass this season and coming in at ninth in the NFL in points per game with 24.8. Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold is having the best year of his career, currently sitting at fourth in the NFL in passing touchdowns with 23, and has thrown just ten interceptions. Darnold’s ten interceptions in 2024 is the lowest amount he’s thrown in a single season in which he has appeared in 12 or more games, and he’s already thrown for more touchdowns this season than he ever has in a single season throughout his seven-year career.

The Atlanta offense will certainly give the Falcons a chance in this one, as Kirk Cousins has helped them produce the fourth most passing yards per game this year, with 242.8. Cousins has thrown for 3,052 yards, fifth best in the NFL, but he is currently enduring a rough stretch that has seen him throw 6 interceptions and 0 touchdowns over his last three games. He is moving the ball nicely, but costly errors have been the name of the game, and now he is fighting against a narrative that Michael Penix Jr. should be given a shot. This week, he will try and fend off that narrative against his old team, which adds another fun storyline to the clash.

But if Atlanta wants any chance at beating Minnesota, their defense is going to need to step up. They allow the highest completion percentage to opposing quarterbacks in the entire league at 71.57%, which Sam Darnold will certainly abuse. He, Justin Jefferson, and company are averaging 231.6 passing yards per game, which is 10th best in the NFL, and the Falcons offer up a great opportunity to continue the fun.

The Vikings are heavy favorites at home, but don’t sleep on Kirko-Chains and this explosive Atalanta offense.
