New York Giants vs. Pittsburgh | Monday, October 29, 2024
The decision by Mike Tomlin to bench Justin Fields and hand over his 4-2 team to Russell Wilson was met with a hefty dose of criticism, but you have to feel that he was vindicated after his team landed 37 points on a very good New York Jets defense. Justin Fields was averaging 184 yards and 0.8 touchdowns per game, and Wilson managed to throw for 264 yards and two touchdowns in his first appearance as a Steeler. Obviously, Fields offers much more with his legs, but it was the passing game that Tomlin was really trying to open up, which Wilson did.
The biggest beneficiary of the move was George Pickens, who collected five receptions for 111 yards and a touchdown. This was the second time that Pickens had passed the 100-yard mark on the year, with Wilson giving him ample opportunity to show off his impressive contested catch ability. Wilson also gave four other receivers at least two receptions on the day, in what was a very good outing for the passing game against a Jets unit that is giving up the second-fewest passing yards per game with 164.7. Knowing what we know about the Steelers' offense over the last couple of years, I’m not sure anybody saw this one coming.
Wilson will undoubtedly retain the job and now turns his attention to the other team based in New York, the Giants. The Giants are fresh off an embarrassing humiliation against the Philadelphia Eagles and their old favorite, Saquon Barkley, whose 187 yards from scrimmage were a painful reminder of their own lack of offensive firepower. In fact, Barkley individually outgained the Giants' entire team by 187 yards to 119. In total, New York has scored just 10 points over the last two games and now sits dead last in the NFC East with a 2-5 record. Not good.
The Giants have been solid on defense, conceding 21.3 points and 317.6 yards per game, which are both 12th in the NFL. They still lead the league in sacks with 31, and it will be interesting to see how they fare against a weak Pittsburgh Steelers line that’s coming off a good week in which they gave up only one sack to the Jets.
When the Giants are on offense, points and yards have been at a premium, with the team ranking in the bottom five in both categories. This is a weird season in which it feels like we are just waiting for the 2025 NFL Draft, when the team can finally select their new quarterback and start being excited about the future. One thing they can be excited about is that they have two exciting young rookies on offense who the Giants' new quarterback will enjoy working with.
Malik Nabers has been a very popular target for Jones this year, reeling in 39 receptions for 427 yards and three touchdowns. He sits at 13th for receiving yards amongst wide receivers, which is impressive considering he has missed two games due to a concussion. Nabers certainly appears to be the real deal, giving fans at least something to look forward to every game.
The other rookie the fans will be keeping an eye on is Tyrone Tracy, who emerged as a playmaker when Devin Singletary went down with an injury a few weeks ago. Tracy made the most of his opportunity by rushing for 129 yards in his first game as a starter, before collecting another hundred yards from scrimmage and his first touchdown against the Bengals one week later.
He and Nabers are explosive and exciting young talents, but they will have their work cut out going up against a Steelers defense that is giving up the second-fewest points per game with 14.4. When you factor in the newfound passing game from Russell Wilson, this is a game that Pittsburgh should be heavily favored in.
