HOUSTON vs RICE – RICE STADIUM – HOUSTON, TX – 7:00PM EDT
We have an in-state matchup between 2 schools that are separated by 5 miles. Rice will host Houston on Saturday, this is the 5th consecutive year in a row that these teams will meet up. Rice has a new head coach this season coming over from FCS Davidson where he made 2 FCS playoff appearances. The offensive scheme under the new head coach will be running the football a majority of the time via the triple option. In Week 1, Rice ran the ball 55 times vs 9 passes in a 14-12 win over Louisiana. In that game they only averaged 3.7 YPC and raked up just 251 yds of total offense.
Houston comes into this year with a new QB (Connor Weigman from Texas A&M) and a new offensive coordinator who worked with Houston HC Willie Fritz when he was leading Tulane. They ran the ball a lot vs SF Austin last week in their 27-0.
I am looking at the total in this game for a few reasons. One, this in the lowest total in the matchup dating about to 2004 (16 games). Last year used to be the lowest total this matchup has seen and the game ended 33-7 on a 44.5 total. Also, I like the variance in the spread as now you have Houston as a double digit road favorite where last year, Houston was just a 4.5 pt home favorite. This line indicates a low scoring game dominated by Houston. I think both teams will want to play slow (especially Rice) and will burn clock. Give me the UNDER here.
