The Arizona Cardinals stifled Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears in Week 9, extending their win streak to three straight games in the process, now 5-4 and top of the NFC West division.
Going into the 2024 season, few expected the Cardinals to be a playoff caliber team, but it's Jonathan Gannon’s team that currently have the upper hand in a tightly contested division.
Their opponent this weekend, the New York Jets, have had one of the most turbulent seasons of any franchise in the game, but perhaps things are finally starting to take a turn. We learn more about their position as a franchise with every passing week, and at 3-6, they can’t afford to lose.
Aaron Rodgers and co’s win over the Houston Texans stopped a five game losing streak in its tracks, and they’ll now look to build momentum off the back of that on the road against the Cardinals.
The Cardinals win over the Bears was largely thanks to an impressive display from their trio of running backs. James Conner has been a tremendously well valued signing for them out of free agency, notching another 107 yards on 18 carries on Sunday, but his supporting cast showed up too. Emeri Demarcado managed 59 yards and a touchdown on just four carries, while rookie Trey Benson picked up 8 carries of his own for 37 yards and a touchdown.
With the run game performing so well, the win perhaps masked some of the issues the Cardinals still face in the pass game. Kyler posted just 154 yards passing, and Marvin Harrison Jr caught two balls for 34 yards. They still don’t have that explosive threat as a unit, and their 190.1 passing yards per game as a team puts them 25th in the NFL. Considering Kyler Murray’s contract and cap hit, that's underwhelming.
As for the Jets, one would expect that with every passing week with Davante Adams in the building, things are sure to improve. As he rebuilds chemistry with Aaron Rodgers and former coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, the potential is there, while also opening up opportunities for Garrett Wilson.
We saw that in full effect in Week 9, with the pair combining for a big performance. Garrett Wilson caught nine passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns, including a spectacular grab in the back of the endzone, while Davante Adams had 7 for 91 and his first TD in Jets colors. It was just a glimpse into the potential for this Jets team, with Rodgers throwing three touchdowns to elite receivers against what is a well respected Texans defense.
Arizona ranks in the bottom third in just about every category against the pass, and their defense is struggling to get off the field. They don’t have a premium rusher, and they’ll have to figure out their pressures if they want to avoid giving Aaron Rodgers too much time.
