JETS @ DOLPHINS 9/29/25

The NFL draft preparations can begin for the team that loses Monday night's game between the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets. Neither team can afford mistakes as both are 0-3 so far in the 2025 season.

The only team in NFL history to make it to the postseason after a 0–4 start is the 1992 San Diego Chargers. The Chargers team was led by a Hall of Famer named Junior Seau. Neither the Jets nor the Dolphins have a player on their roster who is comparable to the Chargers all-time great.

Harrison Phillips, a defensive tackle for the Jets, admitted that his team needs to remove that zero from the win column.

"There's a lot of football left in front of us and things come in bunches sometimes," Phillips stated. "There have been numerous instances where you learn from your mistakes. It can be contagious and has a positive snowball effect.

After missing last week's 29-27 loss to the host Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Justin Fields (concussion) will return at quarterback for New York. Fields sustained an injury during the Buffalo Bills game in Week 2. He participated fully in practice on Saturday. Fields will be under center on Monday night after clearing the concussion protocol, according to New York coach Aaron Glenn.

Fields has passed for 245 yards and one touchdown. In addition, he has rushed for two touchdowns and 97 yards. Tyrod Taylor passed for 197 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in his first game against Tampa Bay last week. He gained 48 yards on the ground as well. The Jets scored 21 points in the fourth quarter before losing to the Bucs on a field goal with seconds remaining.

On defense, both teams are having trouble. In terms of scoring defense, the Jets are tied for 28th in the league, giving up 31 points per contest. They are also allowing 340.3 yards per game, which ranks 22nd in total defense.

Miami is last in scoring defense (32.3 points per game) and has given up more than 30 points in each of its three games. With 370.3 yards per game, the Dolphins rank 26th in overall defense.

Tua Tagovailoa, the quarterback for Miami, has been picked off four times in 89 attempts, and the team is ranked 25th in scoring offense (18.7). Tagovailoa has five touchdown passes on the season. Numerous people have criticized Tagovailoa, including former NFL quarterback-turned-television analyst Cam Newton, who has made some scathing comments.

"Well, anybody can play quarterback in this league then," Tagovaiola said to reporters. "Anyone on the streets who wants to play quarterback should come. Cam is undoubtedly doing what he's supposed to do, but I believe it's simpler to be able to hold a clicker and discuss it that way or discuss what someone else is doing incorrectly when you're not going out and having to follow their lead."

Mike McDaniel, the coach of Miami, rapidly defended his signal-caller. "It's not an easy task to be in his shoes, but I'm very happy with where his mind is at and where his focus is at because if he was a weaker-minded individual, it's tough for any quarterback during any losing streak or any whatever," McDaniel stated.

"He's focused on being 1-0 against the New York Jets and that's why I know he's capable and I'm excited to see his next opportunity that we work on all week because of just that, of being focused on the right things."

Miami cornerbacks Jason Marshall Jr. (hamstring) and Storm Duck (ankle) were sidelined for the entire week of practice. Ethan Bonner, a cornerback, is doubtful due to hamstring strain. On Friday, safety Ifeatu Melifonwu (calf) and wide receiver Jaylen Waddle (shoulder) resumed full practice. Neither player was on the injury report.

Despite being sidelined for the entire week due to a hip injury, McDaniel declared on Saturday that Darren Waller is ready to play. Waller has yet to play this season because of the injury. Out of the last 18 meetings, Miami has won 14 of them.
