New York Jets vs. Minnesota Vikings | Sunday, October 6th, 2024
The first London game of the season will pit the 4-0 Minnesota Vikings against the 2-2 New York Jets. Each team is coming into this game off very contrasting Week Four experiences. The Vikings are riding high after remaining unbeaten against a tough division rival in the Green Bay Packers, whereas the New York Jets just suffered a shocking and embarrassing home defeat to the Denver Broncos.
The Vikings are one of only two teams to boast a 4-0 record, with the other being the reigning Super Bowl champ Kansas City Chiefs. Minnesota has achieved this through surprise dominance on both sides of the ball, with Brian Flores cooking up incredibly confusing defensive schemes, and Kevin O’Connell turning Sam Darnold into one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. Darnold has passed for 932 yards, 11 touchdowns, and three interceptions, while completing 69% of his passes. He has been remarkable, looking completely transformed from the quarterback that his opponents this week drafted in 2018. With Sam at the helm, the Vikings have put up the fourth-most points with 116 and are top 10 in passing yards and overall yardage.
It’s not just the offense that has been getting it done, though, with the Vikings' defense also coming in as the fourth-best from a points-conceded perspective. They are holding opposing running backs to just 3.8 yards per carry and have given up the second-fewest rushing yards this year. While they have conceded the most passing yards, with 1,097, a lot of this production has come in garbage time, and the team also boasts a league-leading 8 interceptions and 17 sacks.
They do most of their damage by confusing quarterbacks with coverage schemes that look completely different from what is shown pre-snap. That makes this week's fixture against the New York Jets absolutely fascinating because they will be tested by the smartest and most experienced quarterback in the NFL. For as much as Brian Flores’ defenses cause chaos and confusion at the line of scrimmage, Aaron Rodgers does a hell of a lot of damage from there as well.
Unfortunately for New York, offensive production has not come easily this year though. Rodgers has looked back to his best at times, but with young superstars Breece Hall (3.1 yards per carry) and Garrett Wilson (47.75 yards per game average) not taking off yet, the Jets have only managed to score 76 points, which is only good enough for 21st in the NFL. This is certainly underwhelming given their preseason hype.
One area where they have not disappointed, however, is on defense, with their elite unit ranking in the top five for both points against and yards against. They have some of the league’s best players at every level of their defensive roster, and it will be fascinating to see if they can finally be the team to slow down this early-season Sam Darnold resurgence. There were glimpses of a few potential mistakes from Sam in Week Four, but a strong outing against this elite unit might be enough to convince the NFL that he is truly here to stay.
