Detroit vs Indianapolis | Sunday, November 24, 2024
The Detroit Lions head into Indianapolis this weekend for an interesting AFC vs. NFC matchup. The 9-1 Lions are first in the NFC North, tied with the Chiefs for the best record in football. The Colts sit at 5-6, second in the AFC South, just two games behind the Texans as they continue their hunt for a spot in the playoffs.
The Lions are currently on an eight-game win streak, the longest in the NFL. Their latest victory came in Week 11 against a struggling Jaguars team, where the Lions put up an impressive 52 points and held Jacksonville to just six. After throwing five interceptions in the Lions’ three-point win against the Texans in Week 9, Jared Goff eliminated the turnovers in their game against the Jaguars. He threw for over 400 yards and four touchdowns with zero interceptions—the most touchdowns he's thrown in a single game this season—and finished the day with a perfect passer rating of 158.3, his highest of the season. The 30-year-old quarterback seems to be hitting his prime right now, and this Lions offense looks unstoppable.
While the Colts’ season thus far has been much less impressive, they are coming off a tough win against the Jets and arer looking to start a winning streak at home against Detroit. The Colts' second-year quarterback, Anthony Richardson, had himself a day against the Jets, throwing for 272 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions. Richardson was also a massive threat on the ground, carrying the ball ten times for 32 yards and two touchdowns, taking his record to 3-3 on the season as a starter.
While Richardson and the Colts proved they can get the job done on offense through the air in their Week 11 win against the Jets, their run game is certainly their bread and butter. They rank 12th in the NFL in rushing touchdowns per game with one and 13th in the league in yards per rush at 4.5. Jonathan Taylor has rushed for over 100 yards four times this season but has failed to find the end zone in the Colts' last three outings after scoring in four of his first five games. Taylor will have a tough time getting back on track this weekend against a Lions run defense that has been stellar.
Detroit allows just 94.8 rushing yards per game, fifth-best in the league, and just 4.3 yards per rush. The Lions also have one of the best running attacks in the league, with a dynamic duo of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery in their backfield. The Lions average 1.8 rushing touchdowns a game, second-best in the NFL, and over 152 rushing yards per game, third-best in the league.
The Lions are big favorites in this one, with the spread set at Detroit -7.5 early this week. While the Colts may have found some rhythm with Richardson at quarterback, I expect this Lions offense to continue to boom, coming up big time on the road.
