MAVERICKS @ GRIZZLIES 4/13/25
The Memphis Grizzlies are looking at a different opportunity than they did two months ago in the final game of the regular season. The Grizzlies were 33-16 and only 5.5 games behind Oklahoma City in second place in the Western Conference on February 2.
But as a struggling team led by an interim coach, the Grizzlies take on the visiting Dallas Mavericks on Sunday. Memphis has dropped six of its last nine games and two in a row. Along with being 20 games behind Oklahoma City, the Grizzlies are now guaranteed a spot in the play-in tournament. Memphis (47-34) needs to defeat the Mavericks (39-42) and have the lowly Utah Jazz defeat Minnesota in Minneapolis in order to finish as the seventh seed in the four-team play-in.
With just 17 victories, the Jazz are tied for the league's worst record with the Washington Wizards. Minnesota is 8-2 in their last ten games, while Utah is 1-9. Back-to-back second-half collapses in Thursday's home loss to Minnesota and Friday's loss at Denver were part of Memphis' decline. In the fourth quarter against Minnesota, the Grizzlies allowed a 26-2 run to turn a 75-69 lead into an 18-point deficit.
The Grizzlies only managed 14 points in the fourth quarter of their loss to Denver, losing 14-1 in the final minutes to lose 117-109 after taking a 108-103 lead. Ja Morant scored 21 points and Desmond Bane scored 24 for Memphis, but the last few minutes were fruitless. Interim head coach Tuomas Iisalo thinks the Grizzlies can bounce back in the postseason despite their recent setbacks.
Jaylen Wells, Memphis' starting forward, suffered a broken wrist at Charlotte earlier this week, and the team has been severely impacted by injuries. In mid-March, Brandon Clarke, a vital reserve, also suffered a PCL strain. The team's decline has been influenced by both injuries.
Dallas, who just defeated Toronto in a thrilling game, is also in the play-in round. In the 124-102 victory, Anthony Davis recorded his best performance as a Maverick, finishing with 23 points, 13 rebounds, 10 assists, and seven blocks.
Davis, who has been battling injuries since joining in a trade from the Lakers, seems to be on the mend. Against the Lakers on Wednesday, he recorded a double-double.
