WOLVERINES @ SOONERS 9/6/25
Oklahoma and Michigan have frequently appeared on college football's biggest stages. The programs have produced All-Americans and championships and rank in the top five in the history of the sport in terms of winning percentage.
Tonight, the No. 15 Wolverines will play the 18th-ranked Sooners in Norman, Oklahoma, marking only the second time in their history that the two college football powerhouses have met and the first time on either school's campus. The two teams played in the 1976 Orange Bowl, a game won by the Barry Switzer-led Sooners.
Coach Brent Venables of Oklahoma stated, "It's going to be a really cool matchup -- two incredible programs that represent all the excellence in college football for a long, long time." "Gonna be really exciting from an environment standpoint."
Both teams are fresh off victories to start the season. Running back Justice Haynes ran for 159 yards and three touchdowns in Michigan's 34-17 victory over New Mexico, while quarterback John Mateer's 393-yard, three-touchdown performance helped the Sooners defeat Illinois State 35-3.
Although Mateer has a wealth of experience—he started at Washington State the previous season before joining offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle at Norman—Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood will be experiencing something new on Saturday. It will be Underwood's first road start as a freshman.
"We can't worry about it, we're going to create noise," Sherrone Moore, the coach at Michigan, stated. In order to make it difficult for our players to communicate, we have methods for making loud noises. They must speak loudly and take steps to ensure that they are communicating with one another. We'll take care of that piece. However, it's best to avoid getting bogged down in all the extraneous details for the time being. So simply carry out and perform your duties.
Linebacker Jaishawn Barham was ejected for targeting in the second half of the Wolverines' victory over New Mexico, so he will miss the first half. The penalty was eventually upheld despite Michigan's appeal.
After Western Carolina transfer Derek Simmons and five-star freshman Michael Fasusi missed the first game, Oklahoma hopes to have a number of players back on the offensive line. The depth chart shows both as co-starters.
Additionally, Jaydn Ott, a Cal transfer running back who is anticipated to play a larger role after recording just one carry in the first game, needs to produce more for the Sooners. Ott's injury kept him out of much of preseason camp.
"When he's at his best, we've all seen -- people that know his journey -- what he's capable of," Venables stated. He's a true weapon, and I believe he will be a significant part of our season going forward. We're going to need him, so I'm thrilled to have another weapon like that on our offensive."
Moore will also be making a comeback. The Wolverines coach, who played offensive line for Oklahoma from 2006 to 2007, played down his relationship with the Sooners. Moore stated, "It's about my players," Therefore, there isn't any sort of emotional connection to it. However, I have a strong emotional bond with the Michigan players. They are my children. Don't get me wrong, the atmosphere is going to be fantastic. There is love in this wonderful town, where I obviously earned my degree, but these kids are what really make it special to me. So that's my only concern."

FREE PICK: BRYCE UNDERWOOD OVER 9.5 RUSHING YARDS
Last week, Underwood didn’t do much in the running game. He was also sacked twice and ended up with minus-5 yards rushing. This week, expect the Sooners to try and get after Underwood with pressure and for the young QB to win a few times. Oklahoma’s defense has had trouble with quarterbacks that can run. It’s a different offense, but Navy QB Blake Horvath ran all over OU last year. Also, look for Michigan to actually use Underwood in the run game, something they didn’t do last week.
