MISSISSIPPI ST vs SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI – HATTIESBURG, MS – 8.30.25 - 12PM EDT

Big in-state matchup to kick-off Week 1 Saturday with both teams coming off horrendous seasons. SO MISS coming off a 1-11 season where their only win was against an FCS opponent and MISS ST coming off a 2 win season with their only wins coming from an FCS opponent & UMASS. The difference between these 2 programs is one completely revamped their team for the better where the other just kept their team virtually the way it is.

SO MISS brought in a new head coach from Marshall Charles Huff who is off a Sunbelt Conference Championship. He brings along 25 players from that championship roster including QB Braylon Braxton, 5 Top WRs and 13 players on the defensive side. They also got a slew of transfers from the SEC and a great FC LB Michael Montgomery who was the star on their defense. MISS ST really didn’t do a lot but revamp their OLINE & DLINE and got people healthy again.

MISS ST’s biggest issue last season was stopping the run as they gave up 217 YPG on the ground (5.0 YPC) and with a Charles Huff team & Braylon Braxton under center, his team ran the ball a lot, nearly 40 times a game for 202 YPG and 5.2 YPC.

For MISS ST, the motivation may be in question as they have their home opener next week vs Arizona St who only beat them by 7 on the road last year.

MISS ST own the history on this series (6-0 SU last 6, 3-1 ATS last 4 meetings) but these 2 teams are much different than who they are now. Last meeting in 2023, MISS ST beat SO MISS 41-20 as 18 point favorites but SO MISS kept it close in the 1st half before turnovers became an issue.

This is SO MISS best shot to take out “Big Brother” and considering a Toledo team beat this MISS ST team 41-17 last year, I think at the very least the Golden Eagles will keep It close here.
