The game between Ohio State and Oregon on Saturday night was marked as potentially must-see TV when the Big Ten Conference's 2024 schedule was revealed. Neither team has lost so far this season, unlike many other highly regarded teams this season. That adds to the game’s allure. The No. 2 Buckeyes (5-0, 2-0) and No. 3 Ducks (5-0, 2-0) will square off in Eugene, Oregon, for their first-ever conference meeting.
The Big Ten's top two teams will play each other in the conference championship game on December 7 in Indianapolis. That game could feature a rematch of these two teams. One, or both, teams could also make the College Football Playoff.
Ohio State is connected to Oregon in multiple ways. Chip Kelly, a former head coach of UCLA (2018–23), was hired on February 9th as the offensive coordinator for the Buckeyes. Kelly coached at Oregon from 2009–12 and led the Ducks to the 2011 BCS National Championship Game, where they were defeated by Auburn. He knows that Autzen Stadium, home of the Ducks, is a special place. Carlos Locklyn, the running backs coach, joined the Buckeyes in April after serving in the same capacity for two seasons at Oregon.
Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson, who average 7.9 yards per carry and have combined for 805 rushing yards and nine touchdowns this season, are the Buckeyes’ feature backs.
Jordan James of Oregon ran for 166 yards and a touchdown in last week's 31-10 victory over Michigan State. Both quarterbacks in Saturday night’s game have performed well this season. Dillon Gabriel of Oregon has completed 77.8 percent of his passes for 1,449 yards and 11 touchdowns, but he also had two red-zone interceptions in the first half of the game against the Spartans.
Buckeyes QB Will Howard has completed 71.5 percent of his passes for 1,248 yards and 12 touchdowns. He is in his first season as the Buckeyes' quarterback since leaving Kansas State. Howard has thrown three interceptions this season.
The teams have played each other three times. Ohio State has won two, including the very first CFP national championship game at the end of the 2014 season. The Buckeyes have won two of the three games. All three games have gone Under the total.
