PADRES @ CARDINAL 7/24/25
As they continue to push for the postseason, the San Diego Padres will be looking to improve their defense and offense. Before traveling to St. Louis for a four-game series against the Cardinals that begins tonight, they dropped two of their three games in Miami this week.
San Diego managed to stay in the third wild-card spot in the National League despite only scoring seven runs in the series against the Marlins. The Padres lost to Miami 3-2 on Wednesday. San Diego manager Mike Shildt has said that his team has played some clean games, but they just give away a little too much and it ends up costing them.
In terms of runs scored, the Padres rank 25th in the major leagues. A.J. Preller, president of baseball operations, has thus indicated a desire to add more offensive depth prior to the trade deadline. The Padres goal, of course, is to make the postseason and advance as far as possible.
Yu Darvish will start for the Padres in the first game of the St. Louis series. Since rejoining the rotation after missing the first half of the season due to an elbow injury, the right-hander has struggled to a 0-2 record and a 6.08 ERA in his three starts. In his nine career starts against St. Louis, Darvish has a 2-4 record and a 3.20 ERA.
After the All-Star break, San Diego will catch the Cardinals reeling from a 1-5 start. After losing two of three games at Colorado, St. Louis was swept at Arizona. The Cardinals were outscored 36-11 in the five losses. Oliver Marmol, the manager of St. Louis, was particularly dissatisfied with his hitters following Wednesday's 6-0 loss to the Rockies, Colorado's first shutout victory since May 15, 2024.
Sonny Gray (9-4, 4.04 ERA), who just suffered a humiliating 10-1 loss to the Diamondbacks on Saturday, will start for the Cardinals in the series opener. In that game, he pitched 3 ⅓ innings and gave up nine runs (eight earned) on 11 hits. Gray has made three career starts against the Padres and is 3-0 with a 1.58 ERA.
