New England vs. Chicago | Sunday, November 10, 2024

Week 10 of the NFL schedule features an intriguing clash between two rookie quarterbacks. Drake Maye and his New England Patriots are taking the trip to Soldier Field to take on Caleb Williams’s Chicago Bears, and, surprisingly, it is the third overall pick that is carrying the momentum. Maye has passed for over 200 yards in each of his last three completed games and looked good in the process. He is in a pretty horrendous situation, behind a dismal offensive line and with very few talented playmakers to utilize, but he is somehow still managing to play well.

Despite suffering an overtime loss to Tennessee last time out, Maye made some nice throws while also collecting 95 rushing yards from eight carries. He put a dampener on things with a head-scratching late interception, but he can be excused for the odd rookie mistake, so long as he learns from them. Unfortunately, some more rookie mistakes could be on the cards this weekend, going up against a tough Chicago Bears defense that is limiting opponents to 191.3 passing yards per game, which is eighth best in the NFL. There is a lot wrong with Chicago at the moment, but their pass defense is not one of them, which means this will be a tough outing for the third overall pick.

The best route for New England to take will be to try and establish the run, which Arizona did very successfully last week. James Conner led the way with 107 yards on 18 carries, but Trey Benson and Emari Demercado also got in on the action with a touchdown each. Chicago looked completely incapable of stopping the run, giving up any hope of controlling the game and ultimately resulting in a heavy loss. New England will look to Rhamondre Stevenson, and Maye himself, to attack this beneficial matchup.

Life has not been easy for the man taken two picks before Drake Maye, with Caleb Williams not completing over 54% of his passes in each of his last two games. Everything just looks hard for the first overall pick, which is a shame, because it really looked like it was all coming together before the bye week. In the two games since Chicago’s bye, Williams’s play appears to have declined, and there are rumors that head coach Matt Eberflus has lost the team. This has all the makings of another midseason firing, which could come as soon as next week if the Bears lose to the 2-7 Patriots.

Thankfully, for Eberflus, New England has been very soft on defense this year, not helped by the fact they have traded several key players away, and Christian Barmore is still on the sidelines with his concerning blood clot issue. They are ranked 26th in the NFL when it comes to rushing yards conceded per game, with 136.9, and 22nd in the NFL when it comes to passing yards conceded per game, with 224.6. If there is a week for Chicago to get back on track, it is this one. Bears fans will be hoping to see Caleb Williams take a step in the right direction, and hopefully get fellow rookie Rome Odunze more involved.
