The New England Patriots will travel to Miami this weekend for a divisional matchup against the Dolphins, who sit just one game ahead of them in the AFC East. While the Patriots are just 3-8 on the season, they've gone 2-2 in their last four games as rookie quarterback Drake Maye continues to gain experience and find comfort behind the Patriots' front line. The Dolphins are 4-6 on the season and are looking to extend their two-game win streak after a strong showing against the Raiders in Week 11.
While the Patriots enter Week 12 coming off a 28-22 loss against the Rams, there is good news for New England. Drake Maye had one of his best games in his young NFL career, throwing for 282 yards and two touchdowns while completing 75% of his passes. Maye also rushed three times for 27 yards, as the Patriots rookie continues to impress with his mobility.
The Dolphins are slowly starting to stack more wins with the return of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who missed some time after a concussion earlier this season. Tua completed 28 of 36 passes in the Dolphins’ win against the Raiders, finishing the day with 288 yards and three touchdowns through the air. Tight end Jonnu Smith had himself a career day, catching six balls for over 100 yards and two touchdowns. Running back De'Von Achane has also continued to shine, rushing for 73 yards and a touchdown of his own in Week 11.
The Miami offense looks completely different with Tagovailoa back in the lineup. In his six games as a starter, Tagovailoa has thrown at least one passing touchdown in each game and has refrained from throwing an interception in four of those. With a passing offense that every defense in the NFL has to respect, it opens up the running game even more for the Dolphins. Miami ranks 11th in the league in rushing yards per game at 122 and should continue to run the ball at a high rate this weekend against the Patriots. While Achane has yet to hit the 100-yard rushing mark this season, he has been just as effective as a receiver out of the backfield as he has been on the ground. The second-year back out of Texas A&M has gone for 349 yards receiving and has caught three touchdown passes this season.
They'll be attacking a New England defense that currently ranks 20th in both rushing yards per game allowed (118.4) and passing yards per game allowed (216.8). As a result, it's hard to believe that this Patriots defense will be able to stop the combination of players like Hill, Achane, Waddle, and Tua this weekend in Miami. New England also averages just 16.5 points per game—30th in the NFL—which suggests a Miami win is most likely. Nevertheless, these divisional clashes do tend to offer up some surprising results.
