COACH RICK CBB PREVIEWS

CARDINAL @ HURRICANES 1/28/26

Tonight, Miami welcomes Stanford to Coral Gables, Florida for some Atlantic Coast Conference action in a matchup of two league opponents looking for some consistency. Since Stanford joined the ACC in 2024, this will be the Hurricanes' second meeting with the Cardinals. On January 22, 2025, Stanford won the first game 88-51 at home.

The Hurricanes (16-4, 5-2 ACC) defeated Syracuse 85-76 last Saturday to snap a two-game losing streak. Before halftime, the Hurricanes had a 41-36 lead over the Orange, and they kept the hosts at bay to win.

Malik Reneau finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds, his sixth double-double of the year. Shelton Henderson and Tre Donaldson each finished with 16 points and three rebounds. Both Donaldson and Reneau contributed a team-high five assists.

"Winning on the road is always hard, especially in this environment, which is one of the most historic in college basketball," explained Jai Lucas, head coach of the Hurricanes. "We ended up with 16 turnovers once more because we had been struggling to turn the ball over. They scored 17 points as a result. But when they connected during the game, we were able to fight and compete. And this was a huge victory for us simply because we needed something to turn things around after two defeats."

Stanford wants to get back on track in order to snap their own two-game losing streak. The Cardinals (14-6, 3-4) lost to Duke 80-50 at home on January 17 and were defeated by local rival Cal 78-66 in their most recent game. Ebuka Okorie is ranked 12th in Division I in scoring, averaging 21.7 points per game. However, he has been held below 15 points in three of his last four games.

The Cardinals took a double-digit lead early in the game against Cal, but they couldn't stop the Golden Bears' comeback. Cal won the game 78-66.

"The atmosphere was fantastic. It's good to have a Stanford-Cal game like that in the Bay Area. Stanford head coach Kyle Smith remarked, "I wish we had played a little better and done our part." "We had some huge swings in that game, and I really like how we started up 29–13 in the first half. They were obviously not going to (continue filming) in that manner. They have a strong shooting lineup.
