VIRGINIA TECH vs. COLORADO STATE (VT -5.5, 154.5

In the first round of the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament on Wednesday at Paradise Island, Bahamas, Virginia Tech will attempt to maintain their impressive start to the season against Colorado State.

Virginia Tech (5-0) is averaging 92.2 points a game this year and is coming off a 78-61 over Bryant on Nov. 19 despite losing Amani Hansberry, who was out with an ankle injury.

In addition to his defensive skills, Hansberry leads the Hokies in scoring (16 points per game) and rebounds (8.3). During the first half of the victory over Bryant, his absence was particularly noticeable.

"Hansberry is the best communicator we've got," stated Mike Young, the coach at Virginia Tech. "We really miss that without him on the floor, and he masks some mistakes that others may make just by sheer basketball IQ."

Four Hokies score in double figures on average, including Hansberry. The others are Jailen Bedford (12.6), Tobi Lawal (14.8), and Neoklis Avdalas (15.2). Lawal pulls down a team-high 12 rebounds per game, while Avdalas leads the club in assists at 5.8.

Colorado State (4-1) just ended a 12-game home winning streak with a hard loss to Denver on Friday night. The Rams have balanced scoring at the top, just like Virginia Tech. At 17.8 points per game, Kyle Jorgensen leads Colorado State, followed by Josh Pascarelli (14.0), Carey Booth (13.6), and Brandon Rechsteiner (13.2).

After making it to the NCAA Tournament three of the previous four seasons, the Rams have established the groundwork for a competitive program. They have subsequently changed their coaching staff and roster after losing to Maryland by a buzzer-beater in March of last year. When Niko Medved left for Minnesota, former assistant Ali Farokhmanesh took over as head coach, leaving just Jorgensen, Rashaan Mbemba, and Nikola Djapa on that team.

Jorgensen scored 27 of his 29 points in the second half of Friday's loss to the Pioneers, but it was insufficient.

FREE PICK: COLORADO STATE +5.5

Colorado State is inconsistent, but man can they shoot threes. They attempt the third-most three-pointers in the country right now and they are knocking down 45 percent from behind the arc. Sure, that may be unsustainable, but even if they hit 38 to 39 percent, they are going to win a lot of games. VT plays fast, but Colorado State ranks No. 2 in the nation in offensive efficiency. That's why the Rams are 3-2 ATS so far this season and 15-2 ATS in their last 17 games.
