COACH RICK CBB PREVIEWS
RED STORM @ PIRATES 3/6/26
This Big East clash features two teams trending in opposite directions as they fight for seeding in the conference tournament. St. John's enters as a road favorite, backed by elite offensive metrics, while Seton Hall relies on a top-10 national defense to protect their home court.
St. John's is currently playing like one of the most efficient teams in the country. They rank 19th overall in BartTorvik's power ratings, driven by an offense that ranks 28th nationally in Adjusted Efficiency (122.0). The Red Storm's ability to dominate the offensive glass (37.8% OR%, 23rd in NCAA) creates second-chance opportunities that a Seton Hall defense—which struggles with defensive rebounding (31.1% DRB, 178th)—will find difficult to contain.
While Seton Hall has a formidable defense, St. John's has shown they can score in bunches, averaging 119.2 points per 100 possessions. In their previous meeting on January 20th, St. John's handled the Pirates 75-66. With St. John's winning 12 of their last 17 games and boasting a much higher "Quality Efficiency" (126.7, 10th nationally) compared to Seton Hall, the Red Storm present a big challenge to the Pirates.
Despite St. John's offensive firepower, this matchup leans toward the Under due to Seton Hall's defensive identity and slow pace. Seton Hall ranks 9th nationally in Adjusted Defensive Efficiency (94.7) and 1st in Block Percentage (19.2%). They excel at forcing teams into tough shots, ranking 10th in two-point percentage defense (44.6%).
Furthermore, Seton Hall plays at a methodical pace, ranking 257th in Adjusted Tempo (66.2). In their last 10 games, the Pirates' defensive efficiency has actually improved to 91.9 (8th nationally). When these two met in January, they combined for 141 points, but with the stakes higher in March and Seton Hall's defense tightening up, a lower-scoring grind is expected. St. John's also boasts a top-25 defense (97.7 AdjDE), making it difficult for a Seton Hall offense that ranks 150th in efficiency and 305th in scoring to keep up their end of the total.
The Red Storm have a significant advantage in "Wins Above Bubble" (WAB) at 1.039 compared to Seton Hall's metrics in similar high-leverage spots. St. John's has proven they can win on the road in the Big East, recently picking up impressive victories at Butler and Creighton.
The statistical mismatch in effective Field Goal percentage (eFG%) is telling: St. John's ranks 107th (53.1%) while Seton Hall's offense languishes at 276th (48.4%). Seton Hall's reliance on getting to the free-throw line (310th in FTR defense) will be tested by a St. John's team that is disciplined defensively.
St. John's features Zuby Ejiofor, who is a force inside with a 121.2 ORtg and a 58.6% shooting rate at the rim. He will be matched up against Seton Hall's Stephon Payne III, who leads a Pirates defense that ranks 1st in the country in block percentage. This battle in the paint will likely determine the game's outcome.
Seton Hall's defense is elite at forcing turnovers (22.6% TO%, 7th nationally). St. John's must rely on Dylan Darling (19.5% Assist Rate) to navigate the pressure. If St. John's keeps their turnovers near their season average of 16.2%, their superior shooting should carry them.
St. John's has also been elite in "Quality Games," going 12-5 against in Quad 1 and Quad 2 games. Seton Hall has struggled in these matchups, going 7-8 overall.

FREE PICK: SETON HALL +5.5 (PLAY TO +4.5)
Seton Hall is very good at mucking up games and keeping them close. Most of their losses this year were tight games - 4- and 5-point losses to UConn, previous loss to St. John’s was by 6. The Pirates have the 10th-best scoring defense in the country, allowing 64.5 ppg and they play at one of the slower tempos in the nation. Seton Hall ranks 291st in possessions per game. Tonight’s game total suggests a low-scoring, grind-it-out type of game. It’s also the lowest total of the season for St. John’s. Seton Hall covered the first meeting against the Red Storm and, in fact, is 9-1 ATS this season when playing as an underdog. I like them to do it again tonight. (Note: +5.5 was still available in -120 range this morning. I’d still play it at +4.5).
