This is an interesting take on this game. West Virginia has had some quarterback issues. Starter Nicco Marchiol has a foot injury and is now done of the season. Last week in a loss to Utah, Jaylen Henderson started the game but was replaced before halftime after going 3-for-7 for 22 yards.
Redshirt freshman Khalil Wilkins came on and did direct two meaningless scoring drives in a 48-14 loss. Now, Wilkins will make his first college start tonight against one of the best defenses in the nation.
BYU is fourth in the country in scoring defense, allowing just 9.25 points per game. They rank 29th in Defensive Success Rate and 21st in Havoc. They're also one of the best third down defenses which is going to be an issue for West Virginia. The Mountaineers rank 130th out of 136 FBS teams in third down conversion percentage.
The Cougars have yet to allow a point in the second quarter. On offense, BYU tends to start a little slower and then turn it on in the second quarter. The Cougars average 15 points in the second quarter. That's 13th-best in the nation.
With WVU's offensive struggles and BYU's defense, I expect the Cougars to have success early and to repeat what they've done in their previous four games - cover the second quarter spread.
