Merry Christmas Eve! There is not a ton of sports action today, but there is a college football bowl game tonight. It's the Hawaii and it features South Florida (6-6) and San Jose State (7-5). There are a ton of opt outs for this game and I think that hurts the Spartans more than it hurts the Bulls.
The biggest opt-out for San Jose State is All-American WR Nick Nash. He hasn't announced it yet, but he's most likely declaring for the NFL draft. Nash leads the nation with 104 catches, 1,382 receiving yards and 16 TDs.
For South Florida, the big news is that QB Byrum Brown may return. Brown missed 7 games due to a lower leg injury. Whether he returns or not, I do like South Florida here. And, no, it's not because it's Coach Rick's wife's alma mater.
The Bulls offense plays fast. They're 7th in the nation in plays per game. They have a top 30 rushing offense, gaining nearly 200 yards per game. In its last 4 wins (over the last 6 weeks of the season), South Florida scored 35, 44, 59, and 63 points. San Jose State gave up 31 or more in 6 of the Spartans last 9 games. I'll back the underdog here with the better offense.
