The college football season is finally here! Even if it is only Week 0 with 5 games, it's still college football. In this Week 0, Stanford travels to Hawaii after a pretty tumultous offseason. The Cardinal suffered through back-to-back 3-9 seasons under Troy Taylor, but Taylor was fired in the offseason and Stanford brought in former QB Andrew Luck to help guide the program.
Luck is the GM and he went out and got former Super Bowl winner Frank Reich to serve as the interim head coach for one season. Not sure how that is going to work out, but the Cardinal have to navigate that as well as the trip to the islands.
It's never easy playing in Hawaii. There are tons of distractions. If anyone can help a team full of 18- to 25-year-olds stay focused on the task at hand, it would be Reich, who was the Eagles offensive coordinator when they won Super Bowl LII.
However, this is a Stanford team that will replace virtually everyone on both sides of the ball. The defense was awful. The Cardinal lost 8 of their last 9 games last season, primarily because they allowed 30 or more points in 7 of those games. The pass defense was one of the worst in college football.
On the other end, QB Micah Alejado started Hawaii's final game last season. In that game, Alejado went 37-for-57 for 469 yards and 5 touchdowns. He was also the Rainbow Warriors leading rusher with 54 yards on 10 carries.
Playing their first game at home against a team that just isn't very good, look for Hawaii to get out to a fast start. Back the Rainbow Warriors to have a lead as they go in at halftime.
