This one's been through more twists than a soap opera. Originally scheduled as a nonconference home-and-home, the game was moved to Rio de Janeiro as the first-ever college football game in South America — then logistical issues forced it back stateside in June, landing it in Charlottesville as a surprise home game for Virginia. The ACC filed a waiver to keep it in Week 0, and here we are: the first conference game of the 2026 season, with both teams carrying real ACC title aspirations.

Virginia comes off a breakthrough 11-3 season under ACC Coach of the Year Tony Elliott, falling to Duke in the conference championship game. NC State, meanwhile, is chasing that elusive 10-win season under Dave Doeren, who's knocked on the door numerous times during his 13-year tenure but never quite broken through. Doeren has made no secret of his belief this could finally be the year.

THE QUARTERBACK BATTLE: EXPERIENCE VS. UPSIDE

CJ Bailey (NC State)

This is the marquee storyline. Bailey returns as one of the most experienced signal-callers in the country — 22 career FBS starts, the fifth-most among active FBS quarterbacks. He's coming off a monster 2025 campaign: 68.8% completion rate, 3,105 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, and just nine interceptions, while adding 215 rushing yards and six scores on the ground. He's on the Maxwell and Walter Camp watch lists and was named a team captain.

The concern? He's working with an almost entirely new supporting cast. The Wolfpack lost their top four pass catchers and lead rusher Hollywood Smothers (now at Texas). Buffalo transfer Victor Snow (88 targets, 1.8 yards per route run out of the slot last season) and Miami transfer JoJo Trader (just 19 career targets) are the new primary weapons. East Carolina transfer Jimarion McCrimon is expected to protect Bailey's blindside, though he allowed 28 pressures over the past two seasons — a potential Havoc opportunity for Virginia's aggressive defense.

Beau Pribula (Virginia)

Pribula's journey has been a winding one: three seasons at Penn State as a change-of-pace option, then a transfer to Missouri where he became the starter in 2025, throwing for 1,941 yards and 11 touchdowns while adding six rushing scores. He missed two games late last season with an ankle injury. He won the Virginia starting job over Pitt transfer Eli Holstein.

The red flags are real: 12 turnover-worthy plays and 25 sacks taken in 10 games at Missouri. He's mobile — 16 career rushing touchdowns across three seasons — but he's learning a new offense at his third stop, and that's a legitimate concern in a Week 0 opener.

KEY MATCHUP ANALYSIS

NC State's Offense vs. Virginia's Defense

This is where the game gets interesting. Virginia's defense was outstanding last season, finishing 14th in available yards allowed and 14th in late-down success. Coordinator John Rudzinski runs an aggressive scheme that finished top-25 in Defensive Havoc. The Cavaliers return significant production from that unit, and the pass rush could get a boost from Matthew Fobb-White.

The Wolfpack's rebuilt offensive line — featuring NFL-caliber talents Teague Andersen and Spike Sowells, plus Texas transfer Daniel Cruz at center — will be tested early. If McCrimon struggles at left tackle, Bailey could be under pressure all afternoon.

Virginia's Offense vs. NC State's Defense

NC State has to replace its entire defensive front six — a rebuild that could be a negative factor through September. Portal additions Harvey Dyson and Joseph Adedire will try to recreate the pass rush, while tackle Isaiah Shirley and nose tackle Josiah Victor anchor the interior. There's also uncertainty in the secondary, with Jamel Johnson's fifth year of eligibility awaiting an NCAA ruling.

Virginia's offensive line is the strength of the team — five grad-student linemen led by All-ACC tackle McKale Boley. That veteran group should give Pribula time to get comfortable and open up running lanes for the thunder-and-lightning backfield combo of Peyton Lewis and Jekail Middlebrook.

TRENDS THAT MATTER

• NC State has won four straight in this series, including the last two trips to Charlottesville. The Wolfpack are 5-2 ATS in the past seven meetings since 2007.

• Doeren is unbeaten against Virginia in his tenure (4-0 SU).

• NC State has won eight consecutive season openers since its last loss in 2017.

• The Under has cashed in four straight meetings at Scott Stadium since 2006.

• Virginia has hit the Under in its last nine games overall — a 91% ROI trend.

• NC State was 0-4 ATS as a road underdog last season — a trend CBS Sports' expert expects to flip.

• The losing team has scored at least 21 points in each of the past four meetings, so this hasn't been a defensive slog historically.

THE ANALYSIS

The case for Virginia is straightforward: home field, a veteran offensive line, a defense that was elite last season, and an opponent breaking in a new supporting cast around its quarterback. The Cavaliers' path to victory is controlling the clock with the run game, wearing down NC State's rebuilt front, and limiting Bailey's time on the field.

The case for NC State is equally compelling: the better quarterback, the continuity at the most important position, and a coach who's owned this series. Bailey already has a signature performance against these Cavaliers — 200 passing yards, a touchdown, and two rushing scores in last year's 35-31 win. The Wolfpack ranked in the 87th percentile in explosive play rate last season and hit Virginia with seven plays of 20+ yards.

The SP+ model projects Virginia to win 28-23, a margin of 4.9 points — right in line with the current spread. But the model also acknowledges NC State's edge at quarterback and the value of Bailey's experience.

The total is where the sharpest disagreement lies. The market has moved down from the mid-50s to 51.5-53.5, and there's a strong case for the Under: Virginia's defensive continuity, the expected heat (mid-90s with high humidity at kickoff), the rain expected around halftime, and both offenses breaking in new pieces. But the history says these teams score — 66 combined points last season, and the losing team has hit 21+ in four straight meetings.
