There are times when backing an FCS opponent to pull the upset of an FBS team makes sense. This is not one of them. Yes, Northern Arizona has the makings of a good football team ... at the FCS level in the Big Sky Conference. Against Arizona State? Not so much.
The Sun Devils return 16 starters from last year's Big 12 champions. Among those is QB Sam Leavitt, the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year last season. Leavitt is on the short (or long) list for the Heisman and he'll have a ton of talent around him. Jordyn Tyson is back at wide receiver along with Fresno State transfer Jalen Moss and former Alabama slot receiver Turbo Hamilton.
Then, there is this. NAU kicker Samuel Hunsaker posted a video of himself kicking a long field goal with a caption that read "5 days away from NAU making history vs. ASU." Of course, there were plenty of responses. One of those was a one-word response from ... Sam Leavitt.
The response was simply, "Bet"
Don't expect the Sun Devils to take the foot off the gas until very late in this one. Sure, it's a key number (28), but consider this a tune up for another beatdown next week when ASU heads to Mississippi State.
