Indiana's offense is not as good as last year's unit, but they do have potential. The Hoosiers are averaging 41.5 points per game. That's after putting up 56 on Kennesaw State last week. It was a huge win that saw the Hoosiers rush for 313 yards and QB Fernando Mendoza to throw for 245 yards and four touchdowns.
Still, head coach Curt Cignetti was not happy about his team's performance early in the game last week. You can bet that he addressed that in practice this week and that's why I expect Indiana to come out and dominate Indiana State early.
The Hoosiers scored 21 first half points last week and will get to 31 this week thanks to 1) an explosive offense that will be more focused early in the game and 2) an Indiana State defense that is going to have its hands full trying to slow down an elite FBS offense. The Sycamores are 2-0, but beat a very mediocre Eastern Illinois and McKendree, which is a Division II school.
It's likely Indiana does most of its damage in the first half. Tonight, Indiana will honor one of former head coach Bill Mallory's teams from the 1990s. The head coach of Indiana State happens to be Curt Mallory, the son of the legendary Hoosier coach. Coach Cignetti will call the dogs off in the second half.
