This one could get ugly, but it's worth taking a shot on the A's at even money. Justin Verlander starts for the Giants and his name doesn't bring much fear into opposing lineups anymore. He's well past his prime. The Giants have lost each of his last three starts to the White Sox, Guardians, and Marlins. Those three teams are among the bottom 10 in MLB.
Now, J.P. Sears starts for the A's and he isn't much better. He's 6-7 on the season with a 5.09 ERA. He did just beat the Yankees last week (but who isn't right now), pitching 5.2 innings without allowing a single run. His home ERA is a scary 6.68, but he's facing a Giants team that has scored 3 or fewer runs in 6 of its last 10 games. Keep in mind that the Giants bat just .210 against LHP.
Sears' expected numbers, like xERA, are lower than his actual numbers. Verlander, on the other hand is 0-5 and has a 4.26 ERA. His xERA is above 5.00 (5.01). The A's just took 2 of 3 games from Tampa Bay, one of the hotter teams in MLB right now. Those three games were at Steinbrenner Field, another hitter-friendly minor league ballpark.
The A's should get to Verlander and don't be surprised if this one goes Over the total.
