If you remember just two nights ago, the Giants-A's game was very similar to tonight. The Giants were going up against a left-handed pitcher in J.P. Sears. Sears had an ERA above 6.00, but he would pitch 6 scoreless innings in an 11-2 Athletics win.
The Giants are one of the worst MLB teams when facing left-handed pitching. San Francisco hits .212 and has an OPS of just .627 against LHP this season. Tonight, they will face Jacob Lopez, who is better than Sears.
Lopez made 6 starts in June. The A's won 5 of them and his ERA was 2.64. He should be able to shut down the Giants bats once again.
Hayden Birdsong starts for the Giants. San Francisco has lost each of his last four starts. Over those starts, his ERA is well above 6.00. San Francisco got the win last night, but the Athletics have won four of the last six games against the Giants when they play them at home.
