Arizona won last night 6-3, but tonight the Diamondbacks must face Nick Pivetta who is coming off of consecutive quality starts. He also has three quality starts in his last four trips to the mound, including one against these Diamondbacks.
On June 15, Pivetta pitched 7 innings, struck out 9, and allowed just 2 earned runs in a win over the the DBacks. PIvetta is now 9-2 with a 3.25 ERA and he pitches well at home where his ERA drops to 2.55.
On the other side, it's Merrill Kelly for the DBacks. Kelly has decent numbers against most San Diego hitters. Fernando Tatis Jr. has roughed Kelly up for four homers in 28 AB, but the Padres haven't faced Kelly this season.
San Diego has not done well against right-handed pitching lately. Over the last 30 days, they are 25th in both ISO and OPS against righties. San Diego has only averaged 3.0 runs per game over their last 10.
Kelly can do enough to keep this one close early. Arizona is one of the best F5 teams in baseball. They are 52-39 on the F5 run line this season and you can't trust their bullpen, which is bottom-5 in ERA. Take the bullpen out of the equation.
