Kirby held Baltimore scoreless over 7 innings while striking out 7. He also pitched 6 innings at the Los Angeles Angels, allowing just 2 earned runs while fanning 9.
The Mets were the blind squirrel yesterday, getting a solid pitching performance from one of their top prospects, Nolan McLean, who pitched 5.1 innings, didn't allow a run and struck out 8. New York won 3-1, beating Bryan Woo in the process.
Clay Holmes starts for the Mets and we talked about his regression earlier this season. Remember, he made the move to a full-time starter this season and the amount of innings pitched is catching up to him. His season ERA is 3.71, but his xERA is 4.37. He has a relatively low strikeout rate below 20 percent and a walk rate that is approaching 10 percent.
In his last start, Holmes allowed 5 ER to the Braves, but the Mets found a way to come back and win that game. The regression has been coming since July. Since July 1, Holmes ERA is 5.44.
Seattle has won 9 of its last 12 games and they are 4-1 in the last 5 against the Mets.
