It's hard to believe that Dylan Cease is 3-10 with a 4.79 ERA this season, but that's where he's at. It's equally hard to back him in almost any spot, but this is one of them. He's pitching at home where he's performed better and he's facing a team that just can't seem to stay consistent at the plate.
Cease is 3-3 at home with an ERA below 4 at 3.99. His strikeout numbers are insane - 74 strikeouts in 56.1 innings. He doesn't have the greatest numbers against current Cardinals hitters, but it's a small sample size. Cease pitched 4 innings against St. Louis last year and gave up 3 earned runs.
Lately though, the Cardinals have struggled against right-handed pitching. Over the last 15 days, St. Louis is dead last in MLB in OPS versus righties. Andre Pallante starts for the Cardinals and his ERA is 4.62. He's a ground ball pitcher who can struggle at times. His last start was a good one, but his previous three were not. He gave up 5, 5, and 7 ER in those three starts.
The Padres have the best bullpen in MLB and they'll take care of business when Cease is done. St. Louis is 2-5 in its last 7 games, 3-11 in its last 14 road games and 5-11 in its last 16 on the road in San Diego.
